Calvin Harris left fans gobsmacked by sharing a photo of the placenta after announcing the birth of his baby boy.

The Scottish DJ is married to Radio 1 star Vick Hope and they announced they were expecting their first child earlier this year. She welcomed their baby boy, Micah, by water birth at their home in Ibiza on July 20 after flying there for her maternity leave.

Calvin told his 11 million followers on Instagram that he was “so grateful” for Micah’s arrival. However, he shocked some fans by including a photo of Vick’s placenta in his baby announcement post – the organ in the graphic pic was being dried and turned into pills, which is believed by some to offer postpartum benefits.

He captioned the post: “20th of July our boy arrived. Micah is here! My wife is a superhero and I am in complete awe of her primal wisdom! Just so grateful. We love you so much Micah.”

Many of Calvin and Vick’s celeb pals rushed to congratulate the couple, such including singer Becky Hill who praised the decision to share a pic of the placenta. She wrote: “Amazing we grow a whole new organ to provide life! Good job not wasting it either, that’s some goddess magic right there!”

Example added: “Meat Caps for the win”, and Radio 1’s Arielle Free wrote: “Welcome to the world wee Micah”. However, others were taken aback by the placenta snap on the post, which has now been tagged with an age restriction by Instagram.

“A disclaimer about the placenta would’ve been nice tho!,” wrote one. Another admitted: “Nothing prepared me for the placenta pic ! [laughing emoji]”, and a third said: “Placenta and placenta pills were not on my bingo card for today but OK.”

The other pics in the post saw Calvin was embracing Vick in the water pool shortly after she gave birth. He also showed fans a first photo of baby Micah in a sweet moment where he held the tot to his chest.

Some parents decide to get the placenta dehydrated and turned into tables through a process called encapsulation. Some claim it has health benefits for new mothers, including that it helps prevent postpartum depression.

However, in a review of 10 scientific studies carried out in 2015 found no data to support the suggestion that consuming the placenta had any health benefits. The placenta is an organ produced in the womb during pregnancy that provides a foetus with oxygen and nutrients.

Vick revealed that she and Calvin were expecting their first child together during a live Radio 1 broadcast. The presenter, who co-hosts the station’s drivetime programme alongside Katie Thistleton and Jamie Laing, told listeners: “I should say that this is my final week.

“I wanted to share that with you because we’ve had such a lovely time over the last few weeks. That time is coming to an end for a bit because I’m going on maternity leave next week.”
