Coronation Street’s Abi Webster star Sally Carman-Duttine insisted she had bittersweet feelings about a huge new role in her and her husband Joe Duttine’s family life
Coronation Street actress Sally Carman-Duttine has opened up about a touching development in her personal life, alongside husband Joe Duttine. The couple, who got together through starring alongside each other in the ITV soap, exchanged vows in 2022 following a three-year romance.
Since saying “I do”, Sally, 50, has embraced her new position as an official stepmum to Joe’s three children from a previous relationship.
When asked about navigating such duties, the actress said things had “worked out great” and insisted she loved Joe’s “gorgeous and brilliant” children.
In a further admission, Sally said the pair had recently become grandparents.
“Joe’s older daughter lives in Australia and she has a little baby boy, so we’re now grandparents,” she shared.
“It’s something I didn’t think was going to happen and suddenly I’ve got this gorgeous family.”
While she adores her stepmother role, Sally confessed to being less enthusiastic about being dubbed a grandmother at 50, and has opted for an alternative moniker instead.
“It’s really lovely and I feel very lucky. Although at 50 I’m not happy with the title of grandma,” she told Yours Magazine. “So instead, I’m called Moo.”
Sally stepped into the shoes of Abi Webster in 2017, while Joe has portrayed two different characters on Coronation Street, Detective Sergeant Carr, and currently Tim Metcalfe.
Despite the potential challenges of mixing marriage with their professional commitments, Sally disclosed the boundary they’ve established while filming.
“We stay away from each other as much as possible,” she revealed to The Mirror. “We barely have any scenes together which is exactly the way I want it!”.
In stark contrast to her real-life situation, Sally’s character finds herself embroiled in dramatic romantic entanglements on-screen.
Viewers have recently watched Abi betray her husband Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) by embarking on an affair with his brother Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard).
The relationship began after Abi uncovered Kevin’s deception about his cancer diagnosis.
When the truth emerged, she turned to Carl for solace, which resulted in a steamy kiss between the pair.
Speaking about her current plot, the actress said that while she “can’t justify” Abi’s actions, she understands her motivations.
“She’s had her head turned by this younger, more exciting, very attractive man. Things with Kevin have been pretty mundane and bleak because of his illness, so this is a real shot in the arm,” she explained.
The star went on to brand her character as “selfish” and “naïve”, and confessed that Abi’s decisions often leave her “scratching [her] head”.
Sally also revealed that viewers have confronted her about her character’s choices, adding: “Anything that gets a reaction is good, because it means they’re engaged, so whether it’s pleasant or not, it doesn’t bother me.”
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV and ITVX.
