Coronation Street legend Lisa George has opened up about getting surgery.

The 54-year-old soap star played Beth Tinker in Corrie from 2011 until 2024. She bid the cobbles farewell in August of last year and quickly landed herself a panto job – the part of the Fairy Godmother in a stage production of Cinderella at the Wyvern Theatre in Swindon.

She has also appeared on rival soaps Emmerdale and Casualty – and appeared on Dancing on Ice in 2020 where she was paired with Tom Naylor and finished in fifth place. But despite her success on the screen, the actress has admitted she’s struggled with her confidence and became self conscious about her appearance.

Lisa became self-conscious about her eyelids during her time on Corrie and felt they were “sagging so much”. She even stopped smiling in photographs as she hated the way she looked, but she had to wear lots of eyeshadow to play Beth Tinker and felt this made her eyes look worse.

She told the Daily Mail: “They’d put all this eyeshadow on my eyes and it sort of sat in all the wrinkles and it just looked like it has been dragged across my eyelid and I hated the way it looked. I was just so unhappy but I didn’t have the confidence to do anything about it.

“No one ever said anything to me, there were no comments, it was more about me being critical of myself. It was just really bothering me. Every time I was putting my make-up on, there were my eyes. I didn’t ever like smiling in photographs because of the way my eyes looked.”

She admitted she would only wear specific make-up on screen in a bid to try and conceal her eyelids. The star said the issue was ‘really getting her down’.

Lisa decided to do something about it and underwent a Blepharoplasty surgery – which involves burning off excess skin from the eyelids and a brow lift. She took a year to decide to go through with the £8k procedure after thinking about the risks, which can include vision loss.

She got the op in January, a year after being diagnosed with non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), a condition can cause sudden vision loss in one eye. This came after an incident in 2016 where she was struck in her right eye by a heavy knot of rope while gardening, causing her to lose part of her sight at the bottom of the eye.

Doctors sadly informed her that she would never regain full sight in that eye, and in 2022, the vision in her left eye began to distort. Tragically, she is now unable to drive due to the condition, and has had to have her scripts enlarged at work.

Lisa was told by doctors that she’d have to get the eyelid op without general anaesthesia as she has diabetes. She admitted to the outlet: “I was absolutely petrified. I just assumed they’d give me a general anaesthetic and I’d wake up and it would be all over.”

Due to concerns over her sugar levels, she could only be given a local anaesthetic. Lisa recalled thinking ‘what am I doing?’ throughout the procedure.

However, she said she didn’t feel a thing throughout the procedure, and the team eased her nerves during the op as they also had music playing.

Lisa explained she had turned down some work as she needed time to undergo her surgery and recover from it – but she hopes to be back on TV soon. She said she’s changed her hair and lost weight since leaving Corrie and hopes to land a role on a show like Rivals, which streams via Disney+.

It appears Lisa is pleased with the results as she’s been showing off her new look online. Taking to Instagram recently, she shared two glam snaps of herself posing in a white dress.
