Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and Fifty Shades of Grey actress Dakota Johnson have reportedly called time on their relationship after almost eight years together
Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson have broken up, ending their nearly eight-year relationship.
Insiders told PEOPLE that the couple have officially split and this time it seems to be for good. “It feels final this time,” one source said.
The ‘Materialists’ actress, 35, and the Coldplay frontman, 48, kicked off their love story back in 2017
Rumours of a split surfaced last August, with an insider claiming at the time: “They’ll always have love for each other but they’ve both come to the conclusion the relationship cannot be sustained long-term.” However, a spokesperson refuted the breakup buzz at the time, insisting: “They are happily together.”
Dakota and Chris were last photographed together two weeks ago when they stepped out in Malibu together on May 16. Before that, in January, the pair held hands in India, as part of the Coldplay tour.
In March 2024, a close source said that Johnson and Martin had actually been engaged for “years” after first sparking engagement rumors in 2020, though they were “in no rush to get married”.
Dakota has previously spoken fondly of Chris’ kids with his ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow, calling them her “stepchildren”.
Dakota gushed: “I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart. How do I feel about motherhood? I’m so open to that. I’ve gotten to this place where I really want to experience everything life has to offer. And especially being a woman, I’m like: ‘What a magical f*****g thing to do. What a crazy, magical, wild experience. If that’s meant to happen for me, I’m totally down for it. We’re not here for very long, so if I’m meant to be a mother, bring it on.”
Chris and Gwyneth are proud parents to Apple, 19, and Moses, 17. Gwyneth spoke about her feelings towards Chris and Dakota’s romance: “I love her. I can see how it would seem weird because it’s sort of unconventional. But I think, in this case, just having passed through it iteratively, I just adore her.”
She mused about embracing new dynamics, saying: “I always start to think of the ampersand sign-what else can you bring in, instead of being resistant to or being made insecure by? There’s so much juice in leaning in to something like that.”
As Dakota promotes her new film with Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans, she questioned traditional relationship norms, stating: “For a long time we’ve all been so quick to judge relationships or how they should happen, how they should exist in the world.
“When people should get married. Divorce is bad. All these things that actually, if you think about it, why is divorce bad? Why do people have to get married or at a certain age or only once? Why? It doesn’t matter.”
