The US President wished the singer and her NFL sweetheart Travis Kelce ‘a lot of luck’ following their engagement – a year after proclaiming ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT’ when she endorsed Kamala Harris
Donald Trump has turned Swifty wishing one-time nemesis Taylor a ‘lot of luck’ with what is set to be the wedding of the century. The childish orange manbaby notoriously proclaimed ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT’ after the superstar singer endorsed his rival Kamala Harris in last year’s race for the White House.
Trump followed that up later with: “Has anyone noticed that, since I said ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT’ she’s no longer ‘HOT?’” But the US President performed one of the biggest u-turns in political history after the Shake It Off star announced her engagement to her NFL sweetheart of two years Travis Kelce.
Trump – who had said he preferred Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs quarterback team mate Patrick Mahomes’s wife Brittany and predicted Swift’s politics would cost her financially – could not wait to bestow his best wishes on the happy couple.
“I wish them a lot of luck,” he told journalists during a Cabinet meeting. “I think he’s a great player. I think he’s a great guy. I think that she’s a terrific person so I wish them a lot of luck.”
It was a dramatic about-turn from Trump coming after the couple’s Instagram announcement of their engagement blew up the internet.
More than 30m worldwide viewed photos the couple posted of Kelce’s proposal in an idyllic garden full of flowers within 24 hours. The black and white Ralph Lauren black midi dress Swift wore in the snaps had sold out within minutes.
Fans were clamouring to get hold of her brown leather sandals. Her £40,000 gold Cartier Panthere watch encrusted with diamonds became a VIP must-have.
While gem experts pored over her engagement ring – a round brilliant-cut old mine diamond bezel-set in yellow gold, according to upmarket fashion magazine Vogue.
Kelce, who at 35 is two months older than Taylor, personally worked with Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry to design it. Jewellery experts estimated it was worth up to £1.5m depending on the colour, clarity and cut of the diamond.
Fans suggested the vast out-pouring of support for the Love Story singer and her fiance may have prompted Trump’s turnaround.
The pair’s nuptials – which the bookies reckon will be next summer and possibly in the UK – is set to be one of the most-watched weddings in decades.
“I suspect Don’s after an invite,” wrote one online.
Trump supporters feared Swift’s endorsement for Harris – coming moments after a presidential debate – could have wrecked his dream of a second stint in the White House.
The pop star made the announcement in an Instagram post signed as ‘Childless Cat Lady’ – a reference to comments by Trump’s Vice President JD Vance.
Swift wrote: “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.”
Within 24 hours 340,000 people had visited the voter registration website vote.gov using a custom link created and shared by Swift.
Swift, who backed Democratic President Joe Biden in 2020, added: “I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.”
Her message was accompanied by a photo of her with a cat.
It came after Vance sparked a backlash by calling several prominent Democrats, including Harris, a ‘bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives’.
He later back-tracked claiming the comments were ‘sarcastic’.
