Drew Barrymore hospital dash as grisly accident left daughter ‘ripped open’

Drew Barrymore has opened up about the ‘scary’ incident that left one of her daughters with a nasty injury and resulted in a quick run to hospital while on holiday

Drew Barrymore’s daughter has been seriously injured.

The actress and television presenter, 50, described how her family faced a terrifying emergency when one of her daughters was thrown from an electric bicycle while a holiday in France.

Drew, who is mother to daughters Olive, 12, and Frankie, 11, with former husband Will Kopelman, shared the harrowing experience that forced her to postpone her appearance with Stephen Colbert.

Drew told the host how the nightmare unfolded and explained that the family were cycling in the mountainous terrain before her daughter “ripped her whole elbow open”, reports the Mirror.

She said: “‘We spent days in an E.R., in and out. She ripped off her bra and turned it into a tourniquet,” commending her daughter’s swift thinking.

Drew deflected any credit when Stephen attempted to praise the mother-of-two for her daughter’s actions: “No! That’s just who she is and I just marvel at her.”

The horrifying news comes after earlier this year, Drew admitted she had been self-centred prior to becoming a parent. The E.T. actress acknowledged that while motherhood is “consuming”, she actually “prefers” this version of herself.

Answering a fan’s question about how long it took her to rediscover herself after becoming a mum, she wrote: “I’m still not myself and I don’t know if I will ever get back to the carefree, selfish person I was before children. I can never not know this love and concern I have for my two daughters. It’s consuming. I am just trying to embrace the new me. And I do prefer me now.”

In her column for US Weekly at the time, she added: “I’m much more capable. Much more trustworthy. Much more admirable than I ever was.”

However, the star of 50 First Dates also stressed that both child-free living and parenthood should be seen as “considered perfectly fulfilling roads” in life. She suggested that “time” is the ultimate tool for self-discovery.

She went on to say: “Motherhood’ or ‘Otherhood’ should be considered perfectly fulfilling roads. And may each one of them lead us to our better selves. I think this takes time, though. Maturity has so much to do with it. Time is the great teacher.”
