EastEnders boozer the Queen Vic finally opened its doors after the devastating explosion for the 40th anniversary saw the death of Martin Fowler, but not everyone was happy
EastEnders fans got to see the Queen Vic for the first time after its tragic fire.
The iconic BBC boozer was destroyed in a huge gas explosion during the soap’s 40th anniversary week. The Vic went up in flames and Martin Fowler (James Bye) tragically lost his life in the inferno; killer Reiss was also crushed to death by a bathtub.
Emotional scenes played out on Thursday (May 8) as Albert Square’s residents celebrated VE Day in the Vic. It came as Brits marked 80 years since the Allies accepted Germany’s surrender in World War Two.
The Vic reopened for the first time since the horror explosion. Many had been against entering the pub so soon after Martin’s death.
But they had a change of heart and decided to re-enter the pub as it hosted some celebrations for VE day. Fans were delighted to see the watering hole back on its feet but were left scratching their heads as it seemed to look exactly the same as it did before.
Vic landlady Elaine Peacock had previously been talking about redecorating the pub, but there didn’t appear to be any sign of a revamp. When Linda, Elaine and George walked into the pub, viewers felt like nothing had changed.
Fans took to social media to air their confusion as one penned: “They didn’t even bother re-vamp the Vic up???? #EastEnders”. A second echoed: “Lmaoo #eastenders one moment i thought the vic would look so different but it’s exactly the same!”
“Fantastic episode with the clips woven in together for VE Day but the Vic… why not use this as an excuse to remodel PLS??? Should have given it a refurb instead of looking exactly the same,”
A fourth agreed: “Brilliant episode but why does the ‘vic’ look exactly the same after all the talk of changing it?”. Another, on Facebook, noticed that Peggy’s photo was no longer hanging up, commenting: “The Queen Vic looks exactly the same! Apart from Peggy’s photo no longer hanging up. Even the knight survived.”
Another noticed minor changes but wasn’t impressed, adding: “”Bit pathetic… See a bit of new upholstery and some brass tap pumps.”
However Linda had recently spoken about keeping the look “close to the original” to give the punters a sense of familiarity. Some fans were happy that the Vic hadn’t lost its original design, with one writing: “I’m so glad they didn’t change the Vic, looks perfect as it is,” penned one.
It looks like there’s more events and drama to come in the Vic in the coming weeks as spoilers reveal Lauren and Peter’s son’s welcome home party will be held in the pub, but things of course, won’t be running smoothly…
