Former Emmerdale star Alexander Lincoln has told Attitude magazine that when he falls in love it’s ‘all-consuming’, which he reckons might explain why his past relationships didn’t work
Former Emmerdale star Alexander Lincoln has opened up about his love life. In a new interview with Attitude magazine, the actor, who played Jamie Tate in the ITV soap, spoke about his sexuality and why he doesn’t care to put a label on it. He explained he’s dated men and women, but his relationships have all “burned out”.
Appearing on the cover of the August/September issue of Attitude, which is out now, Alexander, 31, said love is “all-consuming” for him. He went on: “It’s everything, which may not be the healthiest thing.
“Maybe that explains why a lot of my relationships haven’t worked. Maybe they burn intense and burn out. Ephemeral perhaps.
“But for me, it’s all-consuming.”
Alexander, who is starring in new movie A Night Like This, has dated men and women but doesn’t specifically label his sexuality.
“I sort of flip flop, I’ll be honest with you, between thinking I need to be more definitive – because I want to see more bisexual stories out there,” he said. “I want to see more people who don’t fit into a box.
“At times, the B in LGBTQ+ is extremely small. And I’ve grappled with this. Do I need to define myself so that I can play more authentically? So I won’t get pushback from audiences or whatever?
“But also: who’s entitled to know?”
The hunk, who recently completed a successful run in Billy Porter directed play This Bitter Earth, admitted he doesn’t have a particular type when dating.
He said: “For me it’s never really been about anything specifically masculine or feminine. I don’t have a specific thing that I’ve always gone for with guys and girls.
“The guys I’ve been with have all been different. Same with the women. It’s always been a total mismatch.
“Although… I do like hippies. I tend to like unwashed, hairy hippies.”
Alexander also spoke of the difficult time facing the LGBTQ+ community at the moment.
He said: “I really don’t understand why anyone has an opinion of how someone else wants to live their life. I just don’t get it. I really don’t get it.
“If someone wants to do something in exploring themselves, that’s a beautiful thing.
“These conversations about toilets, for example, they’re distractions. They stir up controversy, turn things black and white. It all feels like very much of a distraction.”
Attitude August/September issue is out now.
