The Eurovision Song Contest has announced the host city for the 2026 contest but many confused fans have taken to social media to point out one very specific thing
Eurovision Song Contest 2026’s host city has been announced.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which runs the international competition, has revealed the news and confirmed next year’s dates much to fans’ delight.
Austria will welcome the contest for a third time next year after their representative JJ triumphed in Switzerland back in May 2025 with the winning track Wasted Love. Last month it emerged that Innsbruck and Vienna were competing to become host cities for the next competition, reports the Express.
It has also been confirmed that the contest will take place from 12 to 16 May 2026 and the semi-finals will take place at the Wiener Stadthalle on 12 and 14 May, before the nation’s largest indoor arena stages the grand finale on 16 May.
Vienna, which the EBU has described as a “historical hub for the arts,” remains the only city in Austria to have staged the contest and has done so twice previously. It formerly held the honour in 1967 and 2015, which marked the competition’s 60th edition.
The happy news sparked confusion among Eurovision fans as many took to X/Twitter to complain about the same thing. One person wrote: “Why on earth was Innsbruck even considered to host in the first place? They should have just decided on Vienna in the start instead of wasting time with a long bidding process!”
A second baffled fan chimed in: “Vienna was such an obvious choice that I really do wonder why they waited until today to proclaim it as the host-city,” while a third noted: “Vienna seemed to be the only logical option but Innsbruck would have been a lovely city for the fans to visit.”
Someone else excitedly wrote: “Flights and hotel booked. My favourite European city – other than my home city of Liverpool. Hope the Viennese do as wonderful a job of hosting as we did. SO excited.”
The EBU has stated that Austria’s capital city was selected following a “competitive bid process” that assessed venue facilities and local infrastructure. Martin Green CBE, the contest’s director, said: “The EBU is thrilled that Vienna has been selected as the Host City for the Eurovision Song Contest 2026.”
“Vienna’s reputation as one of the most musical cities in the world, and its location in the heart of Europe, makes it the perfect Host City for the 70th Eurovision Song Contest.”
