Fan favourite Monica Dolan takes on hit comedy role as show bosses hail ‘coup’

BBC comedy series Smoggie Queens is set to make a return to our screens, and as filming gets underway for the second series, bosses have confirmed a fan fave has joined the cast

Monica Dolan is set to star in the new season of BBC series Smoggie Queens.

The TV favourite has joined the cast of the hit comedy for its second series. Execs have hired her to play an exciting new character.

BBC bosses have given the go-ahead to a second series after ratings for the Middlesbrough-based comedy was released to rave reviews. Viewers were also won over by its cheeky dialogue, as well as its heartwarming storylines, focusing on LGBTQ+ characters.

Now, plans are afoot to bring the much-loved characters back with a host of new storylines that are going to keep fans glued to their TVs.

Award-winning actress Monica is one of the best-loved thanks to her role in landmark drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office. The star has also appeared on hits Black Mirror, Sherwood and W1A.

A show insider said: “Getting an actress of this calibre on board is such a coup for the show.”

Beyond Paradise’s Amalia Vitale and film actress Freya Parker have also landed roles in the new series.

Regulars back will include Mark Benton as Mam, Alexandra Mardell as Lucinda, Patsy Lowe as Sal and Elijah Young as Stewart.

Creator Phil Dunning, who will be reprising his role as Dickie, said: “I’m so happy to see so many of the Smoggie family returning for series two and over-the-moon to welcome the incredibly talented newbies.”

Filming has already started on the new series. Episodes will feature more bonkers storylines.

A spokesperson said: “We’ll see the gang forge ahead with new relationships and rekindle some old ones, all while they cement those chosen family bonds.

“Expect more mad antics and chaotic energy as the queens take you on another ride of your life!”
