Finding Nemo has a hidden secret.
The beloved 2003 Disney film follows little Nemo who gets separated from his father Marlin after his mother dies.
However, if Disney had told a scientifically correct story then the film would have been very, very different. Research presented by the University of Exeter shows that male clownfish actually transform into females to protect their children.
After Nemo’s mum gets eaten by a barrcuda, Marlin would have taken her place and metamorphosed into a female.
Nemo would have also developed mature gonads, become his own father, mated with the now-female Marlin and raised incestuous babies together.
Over on Reddit, Disney fans have been discussing Nemo’s scientifically wrong family structure and one person joked: “Would’ve loved to see Disney explain this one.”
Someone else said: “Not as family friendly that way,” while another commented: “And fortunately Dory would have forgotten all about this horror,” referencing the character’s poor memory.
“Thanks, I hate it,” wrote one unimpressed reader. A second person chimed in: “OMG! Ignorance really is bliss. Curse you for ruining my childhood memories of this movie.”
Others said that the revelation was “too much,” noted that the controversial story line would not have been “suitable for children” and that the story definitely “would not have been as enjoyable”.
Finding Nemo is one of Disney’s most popular and iconic films, released back in 2003 and starring Andrew Stanton, Albert Brooks, Alexander Gould, Ellen DeGeneres and Willem Dafoe.
Pre-production actually began way back in 1997 and was inspired by the director’s childhood, including watching the fish in a fish tank at his dentist’s office.
