James Corden and Ruth Jones have reportedly signed a multi-million pound deal with Apple TV+ for a Gavin and Stacey follow-up series, starring an “all-British cast”
Gavin and Stacey is reportedly getting a spin-off series.
We waved goodbye to the beloved BBC sitcom last year during its emotional Christmas finale. Fans were left sobbing at their TV sets as they watched Smithy and Nessa finally tie the knot, five years after Ness got down on one knee during the 2019 Christmas special.
However, it seems like Gavin and Stacey fans are in for a huge treat as it’s believed show creators James Corden and Ruth Jones are creating a follow-up series. The pair, who played Smithy and Ness in the show respectively, have reportedly signed a “seven-figure” mega deal with AppleTV+.
It’s said they will star in a ten-part comedy drama with new characters and an “all-British cast”. It’s alleged shooting for the spin-off begins next year and it’s set in the UK.
An insider told The Sun : “In what has unquestionably been a pretty miserable year for Brits, there is finally something to cheer — a new James and Ruth co-production. As you might expect, it is uplifting, gentle and very funny.
“They wanted to bring something full of heart and warmth back to screens; water cooler moments for all the family. Naturally there was a lot of interest around the script and a major bidding war to land this production.”
The source said James had a great relationship with AppleTV+, which had acquired the rights to his Carpool Karaoke. It’s also claimed Netflix approached the duo for the Gavin and Stacey finale but they turned down the money to stay loyal to the BBC.
The source added: “This time, with a new format and new characters, they wanted to let an international audience enjoy their work. Casting has yet to begin but everyone involved so far is incredibly excited to get going.”
James said the last day of filming for the Gavin and Stacey finale was an emotional affair with lots of tears. He said Stacey star Joanna Page had been crying almost every day.
He told The Graham Norton Show: “It was a very, very special day. We made sure that the last line people hear in the episode was the very last line we shot, which is a very rare thing.
“Everyone was there at the end with lots of crying. Joanna who plays Stacey pretty much cried every day. There were lots of goodbyes. It was very emotional.”
