Ever since it burst onto screens in 1977 George Lucas’ Star Wars iconic franchise has spawned multiple movies, TV series, graphic novels and video games. But not all scenes made the final cut
Star Wars fans were gobsmacked after they discovered a sick deleted scene from one of the movies.
George Lucas’ iconic Star Wars films have become a worldwide phenomenon that has spawned multiple movies, TV series, graphic novels and video games. It’s racked up an estimated value of $70billion [£52.52bn] and turned its cast – such as Anakin’s Hayden Christensen – into superstars.
Ever since A New Hope was released in 1977, fans have been obsessed with the adventures of Lucas’ characters from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. The universe has continued to expand – the latest is a Disney+ series called Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld.
For over forty years, fans have been treated to an abundance of story arcs involving humans, aliens and robots. But with so much going on already, not everything has made the final cut to reach the big screen – and to celebrate Star Wars Day (May 4) we’ve shed light on one rather disturbing scene.
One such scene, shared by a self-professed super fan, left other viewers shocked at how far Lucas had moved to the dark side. The dark scene saw an alien’s family blown to smithereens during a pod race.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Jacob (@jtimsuggs) brought up the offending sequence, which featured in the The Phantom Menace, the first prequel to the original trilogy.
He wrote: “Still baffled that there is a deleted scene for The Phantom Menace where one alien’s wife and children come to support him during a pod race, only for his speeder to crash and blow up horrifically. They even mention that ‘his wife just got out of the hospital.’ LIKE GEORGE?!”
Alongside his post he shared a couple of pictures of the doomed family. Other fans were quick to share their shock that the scene had even been made in the first place.
One wrote: “The saving grace of the prequels is that they are truly odd movies.” Another said: “I told my friends about this scene and they REFUSED to believe me that it was real.”
A third added: “Facts. I need closure. One of the most gut wrenching pre-death screams in cinematic history.”
While a fourth pointed out: “George has this not-so-secret sadistic sense of humour. Droids scream bloody murder when they’re blown away. Aliens get annihilated for comedic effect. I always felt bad but also… entertained???”
The Phantom Menace came out in 1999 and starred the likes of Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman and Jake Lloyd.
