EXCLUSIVE: his favourite drink in the world might not be what you’d expect, but when it comes to pubs and their offereings, Grand Designs’ Kevin McCloud has a taste for tradition
Kevin McCloud knows what he wants, and it’s not a lager.
The Grand Designs maestro has revealed the lengths he would go for a pint of real ale, and in the process gone some way in describing his perfect pub.
The Bedfordshire man’s chat with the Daily Star laid bare his affection for a traditional British boozer, and saw him bemoan the alternative.
On top of that, the 66-year-old told us that his favourite drink – despite his particularness regarding boozers – was in fact a negroni.
Fair play, but despite putting the cocktail top spot, the design icon was passionate about his dream the Great British pub.
Interestingly, though, he doesn’t want to see a menu anywhere in the joint.
For Kevin, the dream inn would be “a real ale pub that doesn’t serve food and cares about the quality of their beer”.
Sounds magic to us. His comments came as part of a discussion about how much is too much to pay for a pint of beer, and the Channel 4 host left nothing to doubt.
“Now, I’m sorry to qualify this, but it all depends on what you mean by a pint,” he said.
“If it’s fizzy stuff that’s freezing cold out of a plastic tap attached to a keg – which is pretty well everything you can buy in most bars – I’d say 50p a pint, top.”
Fair to say lager isn’t his go to. “And I’ll only be going for the alcohol content then,” he added.
But when it came to the old British powerhouse that is the pint of ale, Kevin waxed lyrical.
He said: “For real ale, that’s cask-conscious, that’s properly looked after in a real ale pub that doesn’t serve food and care about the quality of their beer, if it’s a British-brewed real-ale pint I would… I’d trawl over coals to get to that. It’s not a question of money.”
When asked whether he had also inadvertently just described his perfect pub, he replied: “I did.”
During the chat, Kevin also revealed to the Star how he can sometimes react when fans of the show come up to him with images of their designs or properties.
Kevin, who has been the face of ambitious builds since 1999, has had his fair share of interaction with Grand Designs lovers but despite this still shows a great deal of patience and politeness when met with images of builds.
“Once or twice there’ll be someone who says ‘can I just show you these photos’ you know what they wanna hear, so you just say,” he said, raising his eyebrows “‘That’s very interesting’”.
