Weapons is the latest horror flick to hit UK cinemas today (August 8) bringing viewers a chilling tale of a group of children who mysteriously disappear at the same time on the same night.

Penned and directed by Zach Cregger, the creative force behind genre-twisting horror Barbarian and the 2025 thriller Companion, his newest venture has already garnered glowing early reviews from critics.

Those plucky enough to catch Weapons in cinemas today might find themselves recognising the film’s leading lady, Julia Garner. The actress portrays dedicated teacher Justine Gandy, who finds herself in a precarious situation when her entire class fails to turn up for school. So where have you seen Julia Garner before?

Prior to Weapons, Garner had already carved out an impressive career in both film and television. Her big breakout role was as the fiery southerner Ruth Langmore in the popular Netflix drama Ozark, where she shared the screen with acting titans Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, reports the Mirror.

Her performance as Ruth bagged her three Emmy Awards in 2019, 2020 and 2022 for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series. She also received a nomination for another Emmy in 2022 for Lead Actress for her portrayal of fraudster Anna Delvey in the Netflix series Inventing Anna, although she didn’t clinch the award.

The 31-year-old star’s other acting credits include roles in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Apartment 7A, Wolf Man and The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

In a candid chat with W Magazine in 2021, Garner opened up about her childhood battles with epilepsy and learning difficulties.

“I had really bad reading problems and learning disabilities, and I was also very sick as a child, with epilepsy,” she confessed to the magazine. “I felt like everything that I said was stupid, so I just shut down.”

Yet, acting became her lifeline, helping her break free from her inhibitions and find new ways to express herself. She elaborated: “When I took acting, I discovered that I could use someone else’s lines and still express my own feelings.

“I loved that, because I felt like I was being heard. And not only that, I felt like I could hear myself for the first time.”
