Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez have married in a lavish ceremony in Venice, Italy surrounded by their famous friends and family, weeks after they secretly tied the knot
Jeff Bezos, the world’s second richest man, has officially married his long-term partner, Lauren Sanchez. The couple said their ‘I do’s’ in a lavish £48million ceremony surrounded by their famous friends and family.
The pair exchanged vows in a 25-minute ceremony, with their loved ones cheering, clapping and whistling for them as they said ‘I do’.
Despite celebrating their wedding today in Venice, it was reported that the couple had actually tied the knot weeks ago. A well-placed source involved in the event planning revealed: “They have been married for at least a month, more than a month. The marriage is fully legal and took place in America under American law.”
Although this week’s festivities have been widely publicised as their wedding, the insider clarified that it’s purely ceremonial. “When they were planning the wedding, the]y were clear about the fact that they were already secretly married,” the source stated.
As the legal marriage has already taken place, there was no need for a licence in Italy. “There is no application for a wedding licence from the couple because it was not required. Whatever happens at the wedding on Friday, it will not be a wedding.”, reports the Mirror.
“Under Italian law, it will not be a wedding celebration, any vows said or rings exchanged will have no legal meaning,” they told Mail Online.
According to the same insider, Bezos himself confirmed the marriage and revealed that the couple had arranged a prenuptial agreement to protect his vast $244 billion fortune. It’s understood that Bezos and Sánchez tied the knot in a private ceremony in the US before their high-profile celebration in Venice.
The couple arrived in Venice earlier this week, ahead of their extravagant wedding festivities, which will unfold over the next few days. A helicopter whisked Bezos and his bride-to-be away from his superyacht Koru’s support vessel, the Albeona.
The yacht was anchored off the coast of Croatia, and transported 61 year old Bezos and Lauren Sanchez, 55, to the city of Venice, landing in the Venice Lido, home to the annual Venice Film Festival.
A low-key welcome dinner at the 14th-century Madonna dell’Orto church on Thursday evening will kick off the proceedings. Local sources claim that security is exceptionally tight, transforming the breathtaking city into a “fortress-like operation”.
The ceremony was initially expected to take place at the historic 16th-century Scuola Grande della Misericordia in the city centre. However, the No Space for Bezos campaign group claims that the couple hastily revised their plans after activists threatened to blockade the canals with inflatable crocodiles to prevent their guests from attending.
Instead, the venue has been shifted to Arsenale, a shipyard complex that will be nearly impossible for protestors to reach. Lauren Sanchez and her new hubby made their appearance, with Lauren donning oversized black sunnies and a simple black halterneck frock.
Meanwhile, their high-profile guests began flocking to the city earlier this week. Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka made her entrance alongside her husband Jared Kushner.
She sported a green dress and canvas sunhat as she arrived by boat following a day of sightseeing. The couple’s three children, Arabella Rose, Joseph Frederick and Theodore James, were also in tow.
Other early arrivals included Jeff’s adoptive father Miguel Bezos, as well as celebs Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian. A mere 11 people reside on the island and its only abode is a humble five-bedroom house, formerly a guesthouse to a convent which was part of a long-demolished monastery complex.
