Jonathan Ross left his daughter Honey stunned with a “nightmare” choice he made ahead of tying the knot with wife Jane. The chat show host first encountered screenwriter Jane back in 1986 at a promotional event for his programme The Last Resort.

Jane later invited him to another event in the hope she would get chance to meet him again. Their relationship blossomed and the pair married two years later in Las Vegas.

The couple now have daughters Honey and Betty, plus son Harvey. During his Reel Talk podcast with Honey, Jonathan revealed details about a disastrous moment from his stag celebration.

When quizzed about the occasion, Jonathan confessed: “Mine was really misguided, the whole thing, I don’t even want to talk about it to be frank. I was with my friend from childhood who wasn’t really my friend anymore, but I felt I should invite him. Jane had a friend with her who she had since childhood who wasn’t really a friend anymore.

“We had Jane’s mum and dad who were on the verge of splitting up, we had my mum and dad who had just split up, because we did it out of the country.”

Honey exclaimed: “Oh my God, you invited them even though they were recently divorced? That’s a nightmare guest list.”

Jonathan continued: “That night I went out with Jane’s dad, who I didn’t know that well at the time, my dad, who was fine, and this friend of mine that I haven’t seen for years. It was just like, ‘Why are we four people who never normally hang out together…’

“So I didn’t do a party party, but I don’t think I wanted to anyway. I was too interested in getting married.”

Honey described her father’s stag-do as a “classy” affair, though Jonathan confessed it was an “uncomfortable evening”.

Jane, whose film credits include Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class, and Kick Ass, was merely 16 and beginning her journalism career when she first encountered Jonathan. Despite the decade separating their ages, the pair found common ground through their shared passion for science fiction, horror movies and American popular culture.

In a 2012 interview with the Times, Jane recalled: “I met Jonathan at some sort of promotional event. He’d just started his show The Last Resort. He’d only been doing it for two weeks, I think.

“I can’t remember what we talked about. I wish I could.

“I think I invited him to some other thing, hoping to see him again. Maybe I was less socially awkward back then.”

Jonathan addressed their significant age difference during a 2015 appearance on Loose Women, revealing: “When we first got together, she was very young… I wasn’t that old but I was considerably older and she came straight from home with her parents.

“And I think the relationship carried on, I was sort of a parent figure as well as a husband,” he acknowledged.

Jonathan returns to television tonight on The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice at 8pm on Channel 4, where he’ll join Josie Gibson in discussing Bake Off alongside Jo Brand and Tom Allen.
