Katie Price and Victoria Beckham’s feud is the stuff of showbiz legends – and the former glamour model was reportedly “gleeful” about one aspect of her rival’s life
This month marks 20 years since Katie Price and Peter Andre secretly got engaged following their romantic escapades in the Australian wilderness. The former golden couple first crossed paths on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here in 2004, and subsequently tied the knot in September 2005.
They are parents to son Junior, 19, and daughter Princess, 17. Regrettably, their split in 2009 turned into a nasty public spat, with both parties airing their grievances against each other. However, Katie’s feud with Peter isn’t her only well-documented battle.
The tabloids of the decade were also rife with stories about her infamous rivalry with Victoria Beckham, who was then part of the Spice Girls. Their disagreement began simmering in 2000 when Katie became envious of Victoria’s collaboration with her then-boyfriend, Dane Bowers.
The feud escalated the following year when Katie alleged that Posh and her friend sang ‘Who Let The Dogs Out’ at her in Manchester United’s players’ lounge, reports the Mirror.
Victoria retaliated by labelling Katie ‘vile’ on national television, to which Katie retorted, “She’s got a great-looking husband, a little boy, and all the money in the world. She hasn’t got the looks, but you can’t have everything.”
Despite Victoria’s brief attempt at a solo career, by the time Katie met Peter Andre on I’m A Celebrity, it was clear that Brand Beckham was making more waves.
However, the game changed when Katie and Peter tied the knot and sold their wedding rights for a whopping £1.75million – nearly double what Victoria and David Beckham received for their own nuptials in 1999.
“It was a measure of just how popular they were that the amount paid to cover their wedding was nearly double that of Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas, a few years earlier,” penned Emily Herbert in her book ‘Katie and Peter: Too Much In Love’.
“Even the brightest stars in the Hollywood A-list were no match for Peter Andre and Katie Price.
“As for the Beckhams, their own wedding had been bought up some years previously for just £1million, and given the rivalry between Katie and Victoria, still there despite Katie’s placatory remarks, Katie could be forgiven for feeling a little gleeful.”
Both weddings were nothing short of lavish. Katie made her grand entrance at Highclere Castle in Berkshire – also known as Downton Abbey – in a pink Cinderella-style carriage drawn by six white horses.
Never one to shy away from making a bold statement, she donned a princess-style pink tulle and satin gown designed by Isabell Kristensen, complete with an impressive seven-metre train.
Her headpiece was equally as striking, thanks to her foot-high tiara. Doves were reportedly released from the skirt of her voluminous gown before she and Peter took their seats on thrones adorned with pink and lilac flowers.
Meanwhile, the Beckhams splashed out a whopping £500,000 on their extravagant do at Ireland’s Luttrellstown Castle, with Victoria gliding down the aisle in a £77,000 bespoke Vera Wang dress, crowned with a £25,000 gold and diamond tiara.
They later switched into matching purple outfits to complement the castle’s carpets and sliced into a cake adorned with nude effigies of themselves using a sword.
Post-vows, they released a single white dove and hoisted a flag atop the castle emblazoned with V. B.
D for Victoria, baby Brooklyn, and David. It goes without saying that neither was on the guest list for the other’s lavish wedding.
Katie and Victoria were initially chums, gallivanting across the nation with David and Dane to plug Victoria’s 2000 hit, Out Of My Mind.
However, Katie attributed her break up with Dane to their time with the Beckhams, alleging it “changed” him. “He used to say ‘Why can’t we be like Victoria and David?’ Like the way they were in love – which I thought we were,” she revealed.
“He just kept comparing everything. I think it went to his head that he worked for Victoria. He was always going away with her.”
This sparked years of sniping, with Katie slamming VB for having “horrible teeth.”
Posh was even rumoured to have altered her flight plans upon discovering she’d share a plane with Katie – a claim met with a sharp retort from her spokesperson.
A spokesperson told the Daily Star: “Victoria doesn’t get drawn into public tittle-tattle with anyone – let alone her. It’s not her style. Sadly for her, Victoria’s far too busy being what she is desperate to be – a success in America – to worry about this.
“Victoria is launching her new primetime show on America’s huge NBC network next week. While Victoria has her own show on US television, she is desperate to be recognised and make a name for herself – fighting to get a few cable viewers.”
