Katy Perry is going cosmic, and will make history when she travels to space for the first time as a pop star, on April 14 – and the singer will be part of an all-female crew on the Blue Origin flight
Katy Perry is set to blast off into space tomorrow, on April 14, as she joins Blue Origin’s NS-31 sub-orbital spaceflight mission. Back in February, Jeff Bezos’ space venture, Blue Original Aerospace, revealed that the pop sensation would be part of an all-female six-person squad taking flight for the first time on the New Shepard NS-31 mission.
The stellar event is being orchestrated by journalist Lauren Sanchez, the second half of American tycoon Jeff Bezos. The crew accompanying Lauren into the cosmos includes Katy Perry, scientist Aisha Bowe, bio-astronautics expert Amanda Nguyen, CBS Mornings star Gayle King, and movie producer Kerianne Flynn.
Most recently, Katy Perry shared an Instagram post with the crew in their space jumpsuits, made of blue skin-tight material. Katy, who has long been fascinated with space, captioned the post: “Happy International Day of Human Space Flight. Forever in awe of the Universe and it’s alignment.”
Earlier reports said a seat on the rocket would set you back a whopping £157,029 to £235,544 each. But Perry previously told Elle she has “wanted to go to space for almost 20 years” and wanted to make space “glam.”
She told the Associated Press she has “always been interested in astrophysics and interested in astronomy and astrology and the stars,” adding she wants to “inspire young girls to go, ‘I’ll go to space in the future.’”
Katy and her fellow female astronauts are about to make history as the first all-woman space team since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova orbited solo in 1963, becoming the first woman to do so. Fast forward 19 years, and Svetlana Savitskaya followed suit in 1982, becoming the second woman in space and the first lady to take a spacewalk.
The trip to the edge of space is set to be a quick 11-minute jaunt in an autopilot rocket, with passengers getting a bonus four minutes to bob about and gawp out the window. They’ll be soaring roughly 65 miles above our planet.
Despite this, the event will by live streamed for viewers at home. The space company will provide live coverage of the launch on its social media channels and its website, with coverage beginning 30 minutes prior to launch.
The Kármán line, which is generally considered the start of space proper, sits at 62 miles up. So technically, Katy and her fellow adventurers won’t quite break into the great void beyond.
Chatting with Elle magazine, the pop sensation couldn’t hide her thrill, planning to dedicate this stellar escapade to her four year old tot Daisy, to inspire other young lasses that science can have a touch of “glam.”
The moment she got the nod, her first thought was all about the fashion stakes: “What am I going to wear?”.
When the invite arrived at her door, Katy was gobsmacked, half-thinking it was a wind-up until she saw a photo of the space pod.
Each New Shepard space tourist is limited to a three-pound baggage allowance, and celebs like Lauren Amanda, Gayle King, and Kerianne Flynn have revealed their cosmic carry-ons. Their space-bound treasures range from family snaps, an Apollo 12 flag, cuddly toys, to Malaysian island shells.
Katy’s got something special up her sleeve too – she’s packing an item brimming with life “to remind us how precious the Earth is,” though she’s keeping mum on the details.
Katy Perry’s shock announcement that she’s blasting off into space divided her fans. As the first chart-topping songstress to jet off to the stars, some fans are buzzing with pride, while others can’t resist cracking wise about a potential sequel to her smash hit E.T.
Over on X, one fan said: “That unemployed friend on a Tuesday morning,” while another riffed on her tunes: “Dark Horse gonna turn into Dark Space.”
Another chimed in: “She better perform E.T,” and one ticket holder fretted: “And if she stays stuck up there what’ll happen to my Lifetimes tour ticket?” A fourth suggested: “She should stay there.”
