Katy Perry’s three-word response as she’s blasted into space on Blue Origin rocket

Katy Perry couldn’t contain her excitement as she blasted off into space.

The Roar singer, 40, launched into space with five other women, including CBS presenter Gayle King and Jeff Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sánchez. She has become the first pop star to fly to space and part of the first all-female space flight in over 60 years.

They flew up in Bezos’ exclusive Blue Origin space rocket on Monday (April 14) on a successful flight that lasted around 11 minutes. The New Shephard NS-31 rocket took off from the Launch Site One in West Texas after a countdown from mission control.

Flames could be seen from the bottom of the craft before it blasted off into the air and away from earth. Mission control could be heard saying it “looks good” as the rocket reached “supersonic” speed and soared through the clouds.

And Katy couldn’t contain her excitement as they soared into space, as she could be heard screaming with joy with her fellow passengers. She cried: “Oh my god” and urged the ladies to look at the moon.

“Look at the moon, you guys,” she cried. “Look at the moon!”. Katy Perry also sang Louis Armstrong’s classic hit What A Wonderful World for her fellow crew members during the flight.

Gayle King said she and the rest of the crew wanted Katy to sing one of her hits like Roar or Firework, but Katy insisted on singing another song as “it’s not about me”.

Talking about the moment, King said: “We’d been asking her to sing all the time, and she wouldn’t, and she wouldn’t, and then because everybody said, sing Roar, sing Fireworks. And she said, ‘it’s not about me, I wanted to talk about the world’.”

The craft separated in the air and the capsule – with the ladies on board – landed safely on the ground, assisted by a parachute. The rocket booster landed close to the launch site.

As she emerged from the spacecraft, Katy lifted a daisy into the air, a sweet tribute to her daughter Daisy. She shares daughter Daisy with her famous actor husband, Orlando Bloom.

Speaking about the flight after she touched down, Katy said she feels “super connected to love”. She said: “I think this experience has shown me you never know how much love is inside of you, like how much love you have to give and how loved you are until the day you launch.”

She said of the floral tribute: “Daisies are common flowers, but they grown through any condition. They are resilient, they are powerful, they are strong. They are everywhere.

“Flowers are to me, God’s smile. But it’s also a reminder of our beautiful Earth and the flowers here and God’s smile and the beautiful magic that is everywhere, all around us, and even in a simple daisy. So to really appreciate it and remember it and take care of it and protect it.”

Speaking about her rendition of What A Wonderful World, Katy said: “I’ve covered that song in the past, and obviously, like my higher self, is always steering the ship, because I had no clue that one day I would decide to sing a little bit of that in space.

“But I think that it’s not about me, it’s not about singing my songs. It’s about a collective energy in there. It’s about us. It’s about making space for future women and taking up space and belonging, and it’s about this wonderful world that we see right out there and appreciating it. This is all for the benefit of Earth.

She continued: “This is hard for me to go, because that’s all my love right there. And I have to surrender and trust that the universe is going to take care of me and protect me, and also my family, and my daughter, because, like, I’m full up from being able to get that gift to be being a mom and and to go to space is incredible. And I wanted to model the courage and worthiness and fearlessness.”

Discussing the thrill of the ascent, she said: “The moment, I mean, it is the highest high, and it is surrender to the unknown trust and this whole journey is not just about going to space, it’s the training, it’s the team, it’s the whole thing. I couldn’t recommend this experience more.

“This is like up there with all the you know, different tools that I’ve learned in my life from meditation to the Hoffman process, this is up there, because what you’re doing is you’re fine. You’re like, really finding the love for yourself, because you got to trust in yourself on this journey. And then you’re feeling the love when you come down, for sure, and you’re feeling that strength. So I feel really connected to that strong, divine feminine right now.”

The craft took the crew over 100km above Earth and gave them a few moments of weightlessness. The other crew members were former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen and film producer Kerianne Flynn.

Katy also revealed she will be writing a song about the experience. When asked if she would, the singer replied: “Oh, for sure, 100% and not only that, I got to reveal my set list for the tour on a butterfly. How apropos, just flying in space.”
