Love Island heartthrob Wes Nelson has shockingly revealed a harrowing health scare that could have silenced his budding music career.

The 27-year-old charmer from Newcastle-under-Lyme became a household name after his stint on the smashing hit ITV show.

Post villa life, Wes dazzled audiences on Dancing On Ice and tested his mettle in Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. However, of late, he’s poured his passion into his original dream—music.

Yet, behind the glitzy showbiz curtain, Wes, has been battling muscle tension dysphonia in hush-hush fashion. This throat ailment, triggered by overdoing it on the muscle strain, can tweak your vocals, sap the stamina out of your speech, put the high notes just out of reach, and even cause neck pangs or hassle when you talk.

Defiant in the face of this vocal villain, the ex-Islander is prepped to belt out tunes afresh at an epic Battersea Power Station gig come Friday. Talking to The Sun, Wes disclosed: “I had muscle tension dysphonia, which is not great, and can really mess up some people’s careers but I’ve got it, I manage it and it works and it’s fine now.”

Continuing, he added: “I’ve been going through vocal therapy so my voice has been up and down in terms of vocal health and I’ve really been focusing on music.”, reports Stoke on Trent Live.

“It’s got so much better over this past year where I’ve been seeing different experts having a cameras up my nose and down my throat, it’s a lot of depth and it has been tough to say the least, but we’re back now. It was a scary time. It just had to be addressed when I did so it didn’t get out of control.”

Since his stint on Love Island in 2018, Wes has taken part in Dancing On Ice and The X Factor: Celebrity in 2019, and by 2020 he had bagged himself a record deal with EMI Records.

Chatting to OK, Wes said: “It’s bananas, I can’t believe it. My life has changed so much since being on Love Island. Anyone who knows me personally knows just how much time I spent singing when I was younger.

“I remember trying to make beats when I was a teen. I would go online and download some software that would let me do it and then run through to my mum and dad saying, ‘Listen to this’. Now that I actually do it for a living, I think they’re really proud of me. My mum has one of my songs as her ringtone now. It’s like a dream come true, without sounding too corny.”
