Darts champ Luke Littler isn’t the first star who’s failed to hit the bullseye when it comes to passing their driving test. With pass rates at less than 50%, even professional petrolheads have come a cropper…
Teenage darts sensation Luke Littler is a pro at clocking up points from the oche… but he scores less well when it comes to his driving theory.
Last week we revealed that the 18-year-old world champ had failed his test for the fourth time. But he’s not the only celebrity to find learning to drive a headache, as JAMES MOORE reveals…
Slow starter: Ex-Formula One ace Jenson Button failed his first driving test in 1997. The car-crazy Brit was told by his examiner that he’d gone for a “gap that wasn’t there.” He still insists: “There was definitely enough room.”
Fuel-ish error: He’s not the only F1 driver to fail his first official test. Ollie Bearman revealed his mistake: “I didn’t stop at a stop sign… I didn’t burn through, I slowed down and I was crawling but you are supposed to stop.”
Wheely bad: Gogglebox star Scarlett Moffatt started learning to drive at 17, but managed to fail a whopping 13 tests, before finally passing at the age of 32. She’d previously called her efforts a “nightmare” but would go on to present the BBC show Scarlett’s Driving School, for learners, in 2023.
What a Carey on : Movie star Carey Mulligan failed her test five times, before passing. On the first occasion, aged 23, she failed within 90 seconds after rolling back down a hill towards a Range Rover. She failed another while pregnant saying: “I hoist myself out of the car, crying, with this huge bump and my little sheet with this red cross on it.”
Taxi for Kate! Underworld actress Kate Beckinsale doesn’t drive, having failed at least one test. She has since joked: “I believe they invented Uber just for me. I was feeling embarrassed for a while and then it was fine. I don’t know how to drive at all.”
Black out: Prince of Darkness Ozzy Osbourne took an incredible 19 attempts to ditch his L plates, before finally qualifying in 2009. The Black Sabbath singer said that on one occasion he took some ‘pills’ to try and be more chilled out for the test, but ended up nodding off at a traffic light instead. He woke up to find that the examiner had left a note on his dashboard telling him he’d failed.
Red alert: Inbetweeners star Emily Atack revealed on ITV’s I’m A Celeb, that she failed her test five times. She explained: “So the first one I nearly ran a child over. The second one, I ran every red light you can imagine. Once I was practising parking in the drive but drove straight through the front door.”
Sign of the times: British actress Bella Ramsey, star of TV series The Last of Us, flunked her driving exam while passing posters of herself looking on. She says: “I took my driving test the other day – which I failed – and during that, I kept driving past the billboards, which was quite strange.”
Un-Bieber-able: After failing his theory test, grumpy pop star Justin Bieber refused to get into his mother’s car and walked home in the rain instead. He revealed: “I felt every car driving by was taunting me.”
