Mark Wright has issued an apology after he was criticised for a post that went live on his Instagram page in the wake of the fatal Air India plane crash today, leaving over 230 people dead
Mark Wright has issued an apology after facing backlash for a post that was considered insensitive following the tragic Air India plane crash.
The 38-year-old TV personality swiftly deleted the controversial post and took to his Instagram Stories to explain it was a “horrendous coincidence”. Mark and his wife, actress Michelle Keegan, also 38, have been documenting their Spanish getaway on Instagram, where they celebrated their three-month-old baby Palma’s first trip abroad with some family members. It’s believed they’ve since returned to the UK, and earlier today, Mark reportedly shared an image of them in front of a private jet, joking about the lack of legroom on regular flights.
The Heart radio presenter faced immediate criticism for the ill-timed post amidst the news of the Air India flight disaster, which crashed shortly after departing from Ahmedabad en route to Gatwick Airport in London.
In response to the uproar, Mark expressed regret for the “mistake,” explaining to his followers that the now-removed post had been pre-scheduled. His statement on Instagram Story read: “I apologise for a post I just put up on my page after today’s heartbreaking events. I have posts from a holiday that are on the scheduled setting, which go out on future days I have set them for which was done last week.”
Mark issued a statement explaining that it was purely “coincidence” that his post coincided with the Air India crash. He informed his fans that he “immediately” took down the post once he realised the timing, reports the Mirror.
In his message to his followers this evening, he stated: “It’s a horrendous coincidence that today’s post was on such a devastating day. Once I logged in to my Instagram and realised the post had gone out, I immediately deleted I.T..”
The ex-TOWIE star finished by offering condolences to those impacted by the air disaster, saying: “My heart goes out to everyone who has been effected from today. I’m sorry for this mistake and any offence caused.”
The Sun reported that Mark had made a light-hearted comment about not having extra legroom on his flight back from holiday with Michelle and their daughter, jokingly hinting at not flying private by saying: “1 day babe, for now we’ll take row 26 with no extra leg room.”
According to the publication, some of his followers were quick to criticise the post in light of the Air India tragedy. One person reportedly replied: “Not really appropriate to put this up after today’s plane crash.”
Another is said to have commented: “Prob not the best day to post this when so many people lost their lives on a plane.”
A third individual apparently reacted to Mark’s since-removed post by saying: “Poor taste given today’s event.”
