‘Masterpiece’ Jennifer Lawrence film has ‘twisted’ hidden message you won’t spot

One of Jennifer Lawrence’s most iconic films has left cinemagoers in awe after many are only just realising the double meaning of the movie’s unsettling plot

A Jennifer Lawrence film has left fans feeling uneasy as they finally piece together what it all meant.

The 2017 film stars Jennifer alongside Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, Domhnall Gleeson, Brian Gleeson and Kristen Wiig.

Mother!’s plot follows a young woman and her husband after they move into a home in the countryside. The couple are renovating the house when intruders begin to threaten their idyllic life together.

Another couple intrude and stay over one night before more strangers turn up out of nowhere, tormenting the couple.

Fans have been left baffled by the film’s plot since its release eight years ago, with many comparing the trippy scenes to a fever dream.

However, Mother! has a hidden message you may not know about. Spoiler alert: it is a metaphor for Mother Earth, played by Jennifer. The house is the Garden of Eden, while Ed and Michelle play Adam and Eve.

Perplexed audiences have noticed the religious connotations and filled social media with praise.

On X/Twitter one person wrote: “Darren Aronofsky’s harrowing psycho-horror Mother! opened in theatres on this day in 2017. It’s a MASTERPIECE. Jennifer Lawrence gives a show-stopping performance (barefoot!), Michelle Pfeiffer is deviously delightful as a hellion houseguest. The sink scene is unforgettable.”

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, many critics have also praised the film while one issued a warning: “The anxiety-prone should beware: this might be a rough watch. For everyone else: “enjoy” the ride!”

“The film is ugly, disturbing, and not for everyone — it’s also fascinating, thought-provoking, and rich with religious allegories,” typed another, while someone else said: “Mother! is a dense, twisting fever dream spawned from some sort of mad genius. Depending who you are, you will either end up fascinated by the whole thing or confused and angry with it.”

One review read: “Mother! dives down a dream logic rabbit hole and creates a reality where anything can happen.”
