McFly’s Tom Fletcher forced to apologise for unfortunate post after Air India crash

McFly star Tom Fletcher has issued an apology after he shared a post about planes on social media the day an Air India flight crashed in Ahmedabad, killing hundreds

Pop sensation and writer Tom Fletcher has said sorry following a now-deleted post about flying, which came in the aftermath of the devastating Air India disaster.

The ill-fated jet, en route to London Gatwick with 242 souls on board, met with catastrophe shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, plunging into the city below. By some miracle, a lone survivor emerged from the wreckage.

On the day of the calamity, Tom inadvertently uploaded a flight-related post to his Instagram story but swiftly retracted it after becoming aware of the harrowing incident. His message read: “Sorry, I’ve only just seen the terrible news about the Air India crash.”

Tom took to Instagram again to express regret, saying: “So awful. Had I known earlier, I obviously wouldn’t have posted about my flight today. I understand why that must have looked insensitive and have deleted it. Thanks for letting me know. My whole heart goes out to everyone involved in the crash and all their friends and families.”

TV star Mark Wright also faced backlash over a post discussing planes and legroom which he made a few hours post-crash. He shared snaps from a recent trip, writing: “1 day babe, for now we’ll take row 26 with no extra leg room.”, reports Yorkshire Live.

Recognising the error, Mark removed the post and extended an apology, stating: “I apologise for a post I just put up on my page after today’s heartbreaking events.

“I have posts from a holiday that are on the scheduled setting, which go out on future days I have set them for which was done last week. It’s a horrendous coincidence that today’s post was on such a devastating day.”

He further stated: “Once I logged in to my Instagram and realised the post had gone out, I immediately deleted. My heart goes out to everyone who has been affected by today. I’m sorry for this mistake and any offence caused.”

Tragically, it has now been confirmed that eight individuals not aboard the plane lost their lives in the crash. Ahmedabad authorities informed the BBC that four of the victims were medical students residing in one of the buildings struck by the plane, while the other four were relatives of other students living in the hostel at the time.

Both Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Air India CEO Campbell Wilson visited the crash site to honour the victims. In a statement, Campbell Wilson, the CEO of Air India, expressed his “deep sorrow” over the loss of life.
