Meghan Markle’s alleged over-the-top demands have reportedly cost her a fallout with a high-profile friend, leading her to lose out on the chance for a front cover feature on the fashion magazine Vogue.

Insiders say that ahead of her potential UK Vogue September 2022 issue appearance, the Duchess of Sussex put heavy pressure on then-editor Edward Enninful, resulting in a row between them. At 43, Meghan was collaborating with Enninful on a prominent project for the coveted fashion issue, set to highlight her speech at the One Young World Summit in Manchester and expected to span over multiple features in both the print and digital versions of the magazine.

Meghan allegedly pushed for dominance over the Vogue global cover, dreaming of dual front covers on US and UK editions simultaneously and even lobbying Anna Wintour.

She presented Enninful with an ambitious list of six conditions, a source disclosed to Page Six, reports the Mirror.

“Meghan asked for control over [the] photographer, writer, final edit, photos, cover lines, and wanted a global issue,” the source shared. “Nobody gets that. Not even Beyoncé.”

But Linda Evangelista had already been confirmed for the coveted September 2022 slot by Enninful, who stood firm against surrendering the spot. The stand-off led Meghan to cancel their planned collaboration, marking the start of their rift, as per reports from the outlet.

Meghan Markle reportedly insisted on a Zoom call with US Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour to pitch her ideas for the magazine. However, Wintour had already chosen Serena Williams, Meghan’s close friend and guest at her wedding to Prince Harry, as the cover star for that issue and declined Meghan’s offer.

“Anna wasn’t interested,” a source revealed. “Meghan asked for a Zoom with her to reconsider, and Anna did it to be polite.”

British Vogue’s editor Edward Enninful had previously invited Meghan to grace the cover of the Forces for Change issue in 2019, but she opted to guest-edit instead. Adele remains the only celebrity to have graced both UK and US Vogue covers simultaneously, achieving this feat in November 2021.

According to the Daily Mail, Enninful was left “furious” when Meghan decided against participating after discovering she wouldn’t be on British Vogue’s front page.

“The duchess and her team had high expectations and were expecting she might get a print cover or at least a digital cover out of it, but Enninful was not able to meet those expectations,” an insider claimed. “He already had a magazine cover in the bag for that month. Edward was furious to have lost the project, as were the powers that be at Condé Nast.”

The source continued: “The whole process became very difficult. Edward could only promise her a big showy feature inside the magazine and online – but she turned it down.”

The source added that Meghan and Enninful, who left the magazine in February, apparently aren’t on speaking terms anymore. However, a person close to the situation told Page Six that they still exchange birthday greetings and flowers, maintaining a “warm and respectful” relationship even after their disagreement.
