Oscar-winning Hollywood legend Michael Douglas hasn’t worked since 2022 and has now said he has “no real intentions” of appearing on the screen again in a sad update
Hollywood titan Michael Douglas has said he is retired from acting.
The 80-year-old screen legend stepped back from acting work in 2022 and has now said he has no intention of working again. The star, who is married to actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, said he “had to stop” making movies and would only return for “something special”.
He said: “I have not worked since 2022 purposefully because I realised I had to stop. I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set,’ he told the Karlovy Vary international film festival.
“I have no real intentions of going back. I say I’m not retired because if something special came up, I’d go back, but otherwise, I’m quite happy. I just like to watch my wife [actor Catherine Zeta-Jones] work.”
The actor said he was “trying to get a good script out” of a “little independent movie”, joking: “I’m not pursuing work. My golf game is getting better.”
In 2010, Douglas underwent chemotherapy and radiation for stage four cancer – in 2013 he said he suffered from tongue cancer, not throat cancer. He is now cancer free but has regular check-ups to monitor his remission.
He was able to avoid surgery, and says this “would have been limiting as an actor” as it “would have meant not being able to talk and removing part of my jaw”.
Douglas has spoken about how the diagnosis and recovery impacted his life, including his marriage to fellow Oscar winner Catherine Zeta-Jones. He said he’s now ‘happy to play the wife’ to Catherine, who he married 25 years ago.
Douglas – famed for starring in films such as Fatal Attraction and Wall Street – has said he’s enjoying life outside of acting. He and Catherine share a son, Dylan Michael Douglas, and a daughter, Carys Douglas.
Douglas also shares a son, Cameron Douglas, with his ex-wife Diandra Luker. The pair were married from 1977 until their divorce in 2000.
