Oasis fans have noticed that Noel Gallagher has been chewing on a straw in the build-up to the reunion gigs alongside brother Liam – and now they’ve worked out why
Oasis enthusiasts have been left scratching their heads as to why Noel Gallagher has been frequently seen chewing on straws ahead of gigs. The Gallagher brothers, Liam and Noel, have reunited for their first performances together in 16 years, with Oasis returning to the limelight for a string of sold-out shows.
However, fans have noticed an odd habit that’s only just coming to light. Noel, the 58-year-old mastermind behind anthems such as Don’t Look Back in Anger and Wonderwall, has been observed in public munching on a blue and white striped straw. Curious onlookers have finally deduced the reason behind his constant straw-chewing.
A post on X compiled snapshots of Gallagher gnawing on the straw, prompting fans to question why he is “chewing on that all day long”. It appears that listeners have cracked the mystery of Noel’s perpetual straw presence, and it’s reportedly impacting his live shows.
Supporters are convinced that the straw is a “vocal straw”, suggesting that Gallagher chews on it as a method to soothe his vocal cords before hitting the stage with his brother Liam, 52.
One commenter claimed: “It relaxes vocal cords,” while another chimed in: “Train and rest and control the vocal cords and breathing technique by blowing inside.”
And it seems the fans were onto something. The Mancunian star disclosed that he was advised to prepare his voice for gigs with a straw warm-up by a doctor, after facing issues during his tour with U2 in 2019.
Speaking on Matt Morgan’s Funny How? podcast, he shared: “He gave me his paper straw and said, ‘Half an hour before you go on, in your room, put some music on and put this straw in your mouth and just hum along to whatever comes on and your vocal cords will warm up’.
“I was a bit sceptical, but it really does work. Usually, it would take me a couple of tunes to get into it and now I’m straight into it, straight off the bat.”
Noel also mentioned that he now takes them “everywhere”.
Fans have noticed a number of other subtle changes during the Oasis Live ’25 tour, with some suggesting Noel’s guitar skills are improving with each performance.
The tour, which began in Cardiff on July 4, has included several dates in their native Manchester, with upcoming performances in London, Edinburgh, and Dublin.
But it wasn’t just Noel’s vocal preparation that caught the attention of concertgoers; his guitar prowess has also been a highlight, with fans commenting that he seemed at ease and “getting better every night” of the tour.
One admirer remarked on Noel’s ever-improving musical talents. “Noel’s guitar playing is getting better every night,” they observed, clearly wowed by the elder Gallagher’s growing expertise.
“After seeing Anais’ [Noel’s daughter] Instagram story of her dad playing the Champagne Supernova solo last night, I couldn’t help but notice how Noel is seemingly getting better.
“Makes a lot of sense, with how little lead guitar he had done since (even before) Oasis originally split up. He definitely seemed a bit out of his element playing solos again, especially at Cardiff night one (makes sense).”
Other supporters have since concurred, noting that the High Flying Birds frontman appears to have grown much more comfortable on stage since Oasis’ opening gig.
One fan remarked: “It’s only been three shows and he already seems more confident than the first night in Cardiff.”
Another noted: “The only time I’ve ever seen Noel look nervous and overwhelmed was on the first night of the reunion.”
