Musician Pete Doherty has been enjoying the quieter life nowadays after leaving the wild antics way behind him, well, mostly… But he has now shared some health fears
Pete Doherty really has cleaned up his act after quitting drugs and, for the most part, booze.
Labelled a reckless “wreckhead” for much of his career, the Libertines star enjoys the quieter life these days. Indeed, Pete, who has type-2 diabetes, laid off the alcohol following fears he might lose his toes if he doesn’t take better care of his health.
The 46-year-old explained: “They were going to have to come off, so I had to amend my diet and stop drinking. They’re kind of on the mend now… “I’m letting myself have a drink once in a while, like, every 10 days, but something has, sort of, shifted in me. [There’s] not that need.”
Currently based in a sleepy seaside town in France, Pete credited wife Katia and their 20-month-old daughter for keeping him on the straight and narrow.
He said: “It’s just evolved, our relationship. The closer we’ve got, and the more time we’ve spent together, the less I’ve needed to do it… It turned out she preferred me not on the drugs, and I preferred it when she liked me, and we built a life.”
For a long time, the indie-rocker believed addiction helped his music – but with [KEEP] solo LP Felt Better Alive due in May, that’s no longer the case.
Speaking on the [KEEP] Happy Place podcast, he added: “[I’d think] I’m [dying], I’ve got to write a brilliant song right now… that would happen a lot.
“I’m not that arsed really about writing. I mean, I love music, playing music, but that need to write and create, it was fueled by anxiety and darkness.”
And when is Pete happiest? “Me, [dogs] Zeus and Gladys go across the fields… [then I] crawl back into bed and put on The Simpsons really quietly without waking everyone up!”
