COMMENT: Princess Andre has finally stepped out into the spotlight on her own, with the release of her solo show The Princess Diaries, but her warring parents overshadowed her
It should’ve been the biggest week of Princess Andre’s life. At just 18 years old, she’d landed her own ITV reality show following her as she took her first footsteps into the spotlight without her famous parents, Katie Price and Peter Andre. Sadly, the former couple’s war of words soon overshadowed her and her exciting time.
Last week, four-episode series The Princess Diaries dropped on ITVX. At the time, I wrote of how sorry I felt for mum Katie to not be included at all, while dad Peter was. Now, I’ve been left eating my words.
In the days that followed, Katie continued to snatch headlines with new surgery and more barbed comments about Peter. In retaliation, Pete, who usually stays silent on anything to do with his ex-wife, released a statement, slamming her “lies”.
Less than a week after the release of The Princess Diaries, the show had almost been completely forgotten about – and it can’t have been fun for poor Princess.
The show itself is a great introduction to her, and both she and her older brother Junior come across incredibly well for people that have grown up with two very famous parents.
But while she should have been basking in her growing popularity, she was forced to address claims of a feud with her mum, which Katie has done little to dampen.
“I love my mum and dad and that’s all that matters,” she told fans on Snapchat when asked about their very public feud.
And I’m sure she does. But I wonder right now whether she likes them.
We’ve all been teenagers. We’ve all had moments where our parents have done something to annoy us. But for most of us, it’s behind closed doors.
Poor Princess has been stuck in the middle of her parents’ public jabs, putting on a brave face and smiling for fans on Instagram, where she is a successful influencer.
Last week, I admitted I understood why Katie wasn’t in her show, but thought a brief cameo would’ve been nice. I even conceded, though, that a small two-minute appearance would probably take the spotlight away from Princess.
Now, Katie’s proved me right. She’s taken the spotlight from Princess without even being on the show.
Could she not have had one week of silence to give Princess the attention she deserved from her show?
Katie’s public bashing of Peter is nothing new. Any chance she gets to do it, she does. But this time feels different.
Peter usually keeps a dignified silence, so for him to speak out and reveal Princess and Andre had been living with him since 2018, with a court order enforcing it in 2019, for their own safety.
“I have never made this public before, out of respect for my children,” he said in a statement.
He went on to note that in 2011 and 2015, Katie was ordered to “pay substantial damages and legal costs, and to apologise, to me and my management” after she was found to have made a number of false claims.
If we thought things were messy before, it sounds like it’s only going to get worse.
He went on: “Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations I have yet to address. Those will now be dealt with in the coming months.”
Katie responded, saying she would “no longer be gaslighted and bullied”.
She also apparently “doesn’t feel the need to bring up tit for tat comments”, which, yeah, that one confused me too, given she’s done countless podcasts bashing Pete and his management, The CAN Group.
It’s all in her lawyers’ hands now, she says, so only time will tell how things turn out.
But until Katie and Peter can at least publicly put aside their differences, or better yet just stop talking about each other full stop, neither Princess or Junior will be able to truly break away into the stars they could be.
