The Wizard of the Kremlin, a satire following the rise of Mad Vlad, premiered at the Venice Film Festival over the weekend – but many were in hysterics over Jude Law’s appearance
A snap of heartthrob Jude Law in his forthcoming Vladimir Putin biopic has sparked unexpected comparisons to another, rather surprising screen icon.
The Wizard of the Kremlin, which debuted at the Venice Film Festival on Sunday, features Law taking on the role of the Russian president. However, Law’s interpretation of Mad Vlad in the Hollywood production has drawn unlikely parallels to another screen favourite – one who’s become a household name here through telly and major films.
The British star was suggested as the unexpected doppelganger to Law’s Putin portrayal, with an image from the satirical film circulating across social media. In a post that’s now gone viral on X, viewers reckon Law bears more resemblance to The Office star Martin Freeman than he does the 72 -year-old president, reports the Express.
One viewer commented: “Wasn’t sure what the Jude Law as Vladimir Putin makeup was gonna look like but I wasn’t expecting Martin Freeman.”
Another quipped: “They could’ve just cut out the middle man.” A third chimed in: “I saw the photo in my feed first, read the tweet, looked back at the photo, thought the exact same thing, and then looked up and read your comment.
“Jude Law out here having the audacity to steal work from Martin Freeman..”
Some fans were tickled by another connection between the two actors’ careers, as both Law and Freeman have played Sherlock Holmes’ sidekick, Doctor John Watson, in different adaptations of the Arthur Conan Doyle stories.
One fan quipped: “That’s why they both played Watson.” Another chimed in: “Spot on. They should have gone with Freeman… would have been cheaper, too (I guess, not only on the makeup-department).”
Some viewers feel that Law was a poor choice for the role and don’t want Freeman to step into his shoes either. One comment queried: “Why would they go with Jude Law for Putin when Mads Mikkelson exists.”
Another jested: “I thought that was Phil Collins.” Some were even thrown off by Paul Dano’s appearance, mistaking his role in the film for Benedict Cumberbatch’s portrayal of Holmes.
One baffled viewer penned: “I wondered why they were using a still from Sherlock, but that’s not Martin Freeman and that’s not Benedict Cumberbatch.”
Another confused observer added: “I genuinely thought it was Martin Freeman and the dark haired guy was Jude Law.” A third shared: “For real, I thought BBC Sherlock was coming back.”
Others believe the resemblance between Law and Freeman should have led to the latter being cast.
One person pondered: “Why didn’t they just hire Martin Freeman? I mean nothing against Law but it is funny.”
Another joked: “We need Martin Freeman to play Jude law in the movie about the making of this movie.”
A third wrote: “Honestly could have saved money on makeup just casting Freeman instead.”
