80s legend Rick Astley wants to get indie pals Blossoms in the studio to record something new. The pair previously peerfromed covers of The Smiths songs together
RICK Astley and Blossoms have discussed making music together as long as they don’t fall out. The unlikely bedfellows have teamed up a few times over the years to cover songs by The Smiths including Glastonbury in 2024. Now the pop crooner and indie band have discussed doing something fresh as Rick gets ready for a major 2026 arena tour.
Rick told the Daily Star: “Blossoms are amazing players and great musicians and great writers, it would be great to do something together. And we have talked occasionally about doing something, but I don’t know what that would be. I get a bit nervous of it because one of the weird things is I want to keep my friends as friends, and I don’t want to go through a recording process and fall out with them.
“Sometimes even people you’ve met and think, ‘Oh, my God, that would be amazing’. Maybe just leave it where it is, we’ll see’.”
But there’s no chance of Rick falling out with another of his famous pals – Dave Grohl who has played with the PWL star a number of times.
“I think he’d be hard to fall out with,” smiled Rick. “He’s a lovely bloke, we’ve hung out a few times. All those guys, all of them, and all their crew and everything, I think they’re just really, really, really good at what they do, and that makes the whole thing really comfortable. They know they’re comfortable, and so they spread that comfort, and so it’s easy to be around, so you can chat about anything.”
Rick is tentatively back in the studio after announcing arena dates for 2026 so those Dave and Blossoms collabs may yet materialise.
He said modestly: “I like tinkering, so who knows..I don’t think anyone’s waiting for anything I ever do, to be honest. I don’t think I’ll ever stop making music, but how can you compete with Drake or Taylor (Swift) or Harry Styles these days? You’re better off making music you want to make.”
The 12 date 2026 Reflection Tour kicks off in Glasgow on April 10 and finishes up at London’s O2 (25). Next year he has a lot to celebrate including turning 60, plus toasting Never Gonna Give You Up hitting a billion streams; and not forgetting 20 years of the viral craze – Rickrolling.
Rick said: “Live music is so strong it has changed people’s perception of artist who has been around 30 years… if you were to say to me ten years ago I would doing arenas at my age I would say, ‘what drugs are you on?’.”
