The 90s boyband rivalry often got out of hand back in the day – but now Five singer Ritchie Neville has lifted the lid on how drunk they got the Westlife lads
Boyband Five got rivals Westlife ‘so drunk’ they got them to run into brick walls for a laugh.
Five singer Richard Neville – aka Ritchie – said the five members of the band were chosen to be ‘harder-edged’ than other boy bands.
Five were created in 1997 and included Ritchie, Sean Conlon, Scott Robinson, Abz Love, and Jason ‘J’ Brown, with hits including Slam Dunk (Da Funk), and When the Lights Go Out.Westlife began life in 1998, with members Shane Filan, Mark Feehily, Kian Egan, Nicky Byrne, and Brian McFadden – and were seen as the ‘nice boys’ of pop.
Speaking earlier this month, Ritchie, 45, said Five were seen as tough nuts compared to Westlife. He said: “We were handpicked to be a harder-edged band. We got Westlife so drunk once they were running as fast as they could into a brick wall.”
Sean Conlon, 44, said that despite Five having a reputation for causing trouble, they are actually ‘sensitive souls’.
He said: “We’re known for being the rowdy Five, but we’re actually five sensitive souls. We speak very openly with each other,” he told the G2 supplement in The Guardian.
Five reunited earlier this year, with the Keep on Movin’ tour kicking off in October this year.
In a previous interview, the ’90s boyband star also chatted to the Daily Star about his future TV plans.
When asked if he’d do any more TV shows, as he starred on Paddy McGuinness’ Take Me Out several years ago, he said: “I don’t know if I would do anything like that because of my daughter.
“Kids do love Strictly but the sequins… Never say never but I’m just not certain how I feel about the sequins.”
