Rock star Dave Edmunds has been left fighting for his life after suffering a cardiac arrest.
The 81-year-old musician, who scored a Christmas number one in 1970 with his cover of Smiley Lewis’ I Hear You Knocking, is said to have died in his wife’s arms before he was revived. He is now in hospital, having suffered brain damage and memory loss.
Dave’s heartbroken wife Cici recalled the horrifying ordeal in a post on Facebook. She wrote: “My beloved husband of 40 years has had a major cardiac arrest.” She said the star “died in my arms while I desperately tried to keep him alive.”
She explained a nurse performed “heavy CPR” on Dave at their home in Monmouthshire in Wales, but was going to give up, telling her she was “gonna stop” as “Dave is gone”. However, Cici said she “refused to give up” and Edmunds was taken to hospital, where doctors intubated him.

Cici said it was only “by a miracle” that Dave was revived by doctors at an intensive care unit operating room. His wife of 40 years said he has brain damage and is at risk of another cardiac arrest.
She said: “I’m still in shock and I believe I have PTSD from the horrific experience. My brilliant talented funny and special Dave could really use as many peoples prayers and good wishes so to speak.”

Cici added: “Dave will have a very long journey ahead of him if he survives. We both have. But knowing that there are kind hearted people such as you all. Makes this tremendously difficult journey a little easier.
Concluding the post, she wrote: “Bless you all. Sending you all much love and light and always.” Cici, who married Dave in 1983, was inundated with support from followers sending their love and prayers for him.
Dave had a string of hits in the 1970s and early 80s with tracks such as Girls Talk, The Promised Land and Slipping Away. He has also played with the likes of Ringo Starr, Nick Lowe and Sir Paul McCartney.
Dave’s band Love Sculpture scored a Number Five on the UK Singles Chart and grabbed the attention of DJ John Peel, who played it on his shows. His Christmas hit I Hear You Knocking sold three million copies and also reached Number Four in the US.
He toured with Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band for tours in 1992 and 2000. The last show he played was in July 2017.
Edmunds once appeared in the David Essex movie Stardust. He played a band member in the 1974 film, which stars Essex, Adam Faith and Larry Hangman as well as the likes of Keith Moon and Marty Wilde.
