Rod Stewart’s Glastonbury gig compared to ‘Benidorm’ as he makes song mistake

Rod Stewart took to the Pyramid Stage for the Legends Slot at Glastonbury on Sunday afternoon and he was quick to make sure his voice was heard as he kicked off his performance

Sir Rod Stewart had a lot to say as he took to the Glastonbury stage. While acts like Kneecap and Bob Vylan stirred up controversy with their political stances, the seasoned singer was more focused on charming the crowd with his collection of classics.

Despite being 80, the Do Ya Think I’m Sexy crooner turned back the clock in his Legends Slot at Worthy Farm on Sunday. After he made a sweary complaint and gave a brief political comment about Ukraine, he launched into Love Train, with his performance warmly received by those watching at home.

With his signature husky, soulful voice belting out his extensive list of hits, Sir Rod aimed to ensure the weekend ended on a high note.

However, not everyone was impressed with Rod’s performance, with some even comparing it to a pub gig. “This Rod Stewart performance. It’s just so rubbish. Strong Benidorm/Phoenix Club vibes. #Glastonbury,” vented one Twitter/X user.

Another chimed in: “Sir Rod Stewart don’t take this the wrong way. But it’s time to throw in the towel #Glastonbury2025!!” A third questioned why the star didn’t kick off the set with his own songs. “Why is Rod Stewart ‘singing’ (use the term loosely) covers and not his own hits? #Glastonbury,” they queried, reports the Mirror.

However, many were enamoured with his performance. One fan enthused: “Rod Stewart is such a great performer man,” accompanied by a clapping hands emoji. Another concurred, stating: ” Like him or not. Rod Stewart has still got it! He’s a showman, great entertainer, and can work a crowd. You go Rod! Big shout out to his Band.”

Instead of using his time to chat with his fans, he declared: “I only have an hour and a half so I want to get through as many songs as I can – NEXT.” He then launched into his classic hit, You Wear It Well.

He proceeded to perform from his impressive repertoire, swiftly following up with Maggie May. This quick change had fans expressing their love online once again. At one point, he came in too early but laughed off the mistake, readjusting before wiping sweat from his brow in the intense heat.

He later introduced upcoming guests including Ronnie Wood, Mick Hucknall and Lulu, before delivering an emotional tribute performance for Christine McVie.

Earlier in the day, his wife Penny Lancaster was spotted mingling with fans of the singer. She was seen grinning as she posed for photos with individuals dressed as her superstar husband – complete with wigs.

On Saturday, Kate Nash took a swipe at the singer during her set. However, her expletive-laden rant wasn’t solely directed at Rod. JK Rowling, Denise Welch, Keir Starmer and Nigel Farage were also targeted in her tirade. The Foundations singer, who was the main act in the Left Field tent at the festival on Saturday night, seemed to take a swipe at Harry Potter author Rowling on stage before turning her attention to music executives.

Speaking about Denise Welch, who was at the festival supporting her son Matty Healy’s band The 1975, Kate went on: “The music industry doesn’t know what to do with me. They tried to get rid of me, but they didn’t. There is a record executive sweating their t*** off with Matt Healy’s mum.”

Then it was Rod’s turn. As she started her song D***head, she said: “F*** Rod Stewart. This one [Why You Being A D****head For] goes out to Keir Starmer, JK Rowling, Rod Stewart and Nigel f****** Farage.”

This comes after Rod voiced his support for Farage last week in an interview with the Times.
