Scooby-Doo movie had steamy girl-on-girl scene that fans never saw as star speaks out

Scooby-Doo fans are used to watching the gang hunt ghouls and bad guys but they may be shocked to learn that Daphne and Velma shared a romantic scene that got cut

Fans of the Scooby-Doo movie missed out on a “steamy” scene involving Daphne and Velma.

It’s been 23 years since the live-action Scooby-Doo film hit cinemas back in 2002. Starring the likes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar and her husband Freddie Prinze Jr, the film brought the iconic Scooby-Doo cartoon to life for the first time.

Scooby fans are used to seeing Fred (Freddie Prinze Jr) swoon over Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar) as the gang investigate all the creepy mysteries. The blonde hunk doesn’t exactly make it subtle that he likes her.

Every time Fred suggests the gang should “split up” and look for clues, he makes sure he’s partnered up with Daphne (clever move). It normally means a terrified Shaggy and Scooby are left to their own devices and Velma is something of a third wheel.

However, what you probably didn’t expect is that Daphne and Velma (Linda Cardellini) share a kiss in a deleted scene of the live-action movie. Daphne star Sarah herself confirmed it – and is even campaigning for it to be shown to the world.

She revealed some of the scenes that didn’t make the final cut during an appearance on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live: She said: “There was a steamy kiss. It got cut. There was an actual kiss between Daphne and Velma that got cut. I feel like the world wants to see it. I don’t know where it is.”

The actress also recalled how there was a scene in the film that included a joke about Freddie ‘looking gay’. “There was a great line too that I’ll never forget,” she added.

“We were having a fight, Daphne and Fred, and then I yell at him, ‘And that ascot makes you look gay!’ And I slam the door and they cut that, too.”

She revealed she found the scene so funny that it was the reason she signed on to do the film. She added: “I think that was the reason I signed onto the movie. It’s something everyone’s thought for a long time. There’s always been an implication about Fred being interested in both parties. It all got cut.”

The movie’s screenwriter James Gunn previously admitted he wanted to make Velma gay in the first movie and the sequel, Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed. However, the studio wouldn’t let him do so.

In a 2020 Twitter thread, he wrote: “In 2001, Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script. But the studio just kept watering it down and watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) and finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”

Velma was portrayed as lesbian in the Scooby-Doo animated movie, Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!. She was also portrayed as queer in the HBO Max prequel series, Velma.

Velma star Linda Cardellini revealed her support for the character’s sexuality. She told Entertainment Weekly: “Velma has been around since 1969.

“I just went trick or treating with my daughter and there were a lot of Velmas out there, so I love that she still has this place in culture that is sort of always active for decades. I think [her being a lesbian has] been hinted at so many times, and I think it’s great that it’s finally out there.”
