The iconic UK comedy-drama Shameless has landed on Netflix and is available to stream now, and many fans believe the series is “far better” than the “Hollywood version”
The original series of Shameless, set in Manchester, is considered “way better” than the US version by many viewers and is now available to watch on Netflix.
The Channel 4 comedy-drama stars David Threlfall as Frank Gallagher, James McAvoy as Steve McBride, Rebecca Atkinson as Karen Maguire, Jody Latham as Lip Gallagher, Elliot Tittensor as Carl Gallagher, Rebecca Ryan as Debbie Gallagher and Tina Malone as Mimi Maguire.
Shameless was a smash hit and followed the lives of the Gallagher family, their neighbours and their friends in a Manchester council estate. It aired from 2004 until 2013 and was loved by the nation, even winning Best Drama Series at the BAFTAs and Best Comedy Drama at the British Comedy Awards.
The show was famously rebooted for American audiences in June 2011, featuring William H. Macy as Frank Gallagher, Emmy Rossum as Fiona Gallagher, Cameron Monaghan as Ian Gallagher, Ethan Cutkosky as Carl Gallagher and The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White as Lip Gallagher.
Shameless US is set in the South Side of Chicago, Illinois as became Showtime’s longest-running original-scripted series. The show’s finale episode aired in April 2021.
There has long been debate over whether the UK or the US version is better, but many people agree that the British storyline does a better job at depicting a poor, dysfunctional family in a realistic light.
Over on Reddit, fans have praised the UK show for being far better than its American counterpart. One person wrote: “UK version is better by far [in my opinion], it’s grittier, more realistic and less Hollywood drama. The characters feel like real people, proper UK council estate [residents],” before stating that the acting is better “for the most part”.
Someone else said the “UK version is so much better,” while a third person wrote: “UK one is better [because] 1. It’s the original 2. It’s more realistic to real life 3. It’s way funnier and I was raised where it was filmed, so obv[iously] I’m gonna say UK 4. Frank is better in UK [version].”
Another comment read: “The British version is believable and in a sad way very true. The US version is a typical Disney version of a hard life. The UK production is certainly better in my opinion.”
