Simon Cowell has opened up about his experience of fatherhood and admitted he’s ‘very worried’ about his 11 year old son Eric, who he shares with partner Lauren Silverman
Simon Cowell has given a surprisingly heartfelt account of his journey as a dad, chatting to This Morning’s Jeff Brazier with Father’s Day on the horizon. The 65-year-old music tycoon spoke candidly about the profound change fatherhood has had on him and his approach to raising his 11-year-old lad.
The Britain’s Got Talent panellist, who welcomed his boy Eric into the world in February 2014 with his other half Lauren Silverman, tends to keep his family affairs out of the spotlight. Yet, fans caught an adorable peek of Eric on the telly during a remarkable Golden Buzzer moment on the 2024 run of the hit programme, when the youngster had a go at pressing the button.
Throughout the series, Simon let slip that his offspring has taken to the drums, and now he’s spilled even more beans on being a dad to fellow father and interviewer Jeff. “Honestly, everything. Out of everything I’ve ever done in my life, this is the best thing to ever happen to me.
“The very first time I saw his scan, I was literally obsessed,” the usually acid-tongued music tycoon gushed
However, in between the heartwarming tales, Simon also voiced his worries over the challenges of rearing a child in the modern age, especially concerning the use of tech.
“We’re getting to a point where the word phone comes up. ‘Oh god, here we go,'” grumbled Simon, renowned for not owning a personal mobile himself.
He commented: “I’m very worried Jeff, about how much kids can see at a certain age. I grew up…Which was learning things at the right time, the right age, etcetera etcetera.
“I just would be petrified of him having access to anything, that would really worry me.”
He went on to add: “I think schools put too much pressure on kids, which is, you’re getting up at seven in the morning, you’re coming home say at five, six in the afternoon, evening and then you’ve got to do two hours of homework.
“It’s like, they’re ten, eleven, twelve years old. It’s too much. I would say to any teacher watching, ban homework, you’ll have happier kids and they’ll do better.”
Simon, known for his tough stance as a judge since his time on Pop Idol in 2001, has also indicated that he wouldn’t go easy on his own son, Eric, when it comes to entertainment aspirations.
Discussing with Jeff about the possibility of Eric stepping into showbiz, Simon affirmed he would tell it to him straight.
Thinking about if Eric wanted to be in the limelight, Simon assured: “I’ve thought about this. What if he said to me, ‘I want to be a singer’ and he couldn’t sing, I would be absolutely honest with him.
“If he couldn’t, I would say, ‘You know what, be a drummer,'” followed by laughter.
“He actually can play the drums well but he’s quite shy. You know, I walk and I hear him, and he stops.
“I say, ‘Why are you stopping?’ and he says, ‘Well, I’m a bit embarrassed’ and I say, ‘Well don’t be, you’re really good.”
