Spring Breakers is one of the most controversial films of the 2010s and now a sequel is reportedly in the works, but fans of the original have been slamming the upcoming project
Spring Breakers 2 is officially in the works.
A sequel to the 2012 film has been confirmed 13 years after the original was released starring Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine and James Franco.
The controversial film has amassed a cult following in recent years, but the news of a follow-up film has not been well received by fans of the original.
Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain is set to star Disney’s Bella Thornel, Stranger Things’ Grace Van Dien, Ariel Martin and True Whitaker.
Despite the promising all-star cast, fans of the original have taken to social media to slam the idea of a sequel and branded the project “unnecessary”.
One person savagely wrote: “We don’t need this,” while another fumed: “We don’t need this, this is going to be worse than American Psycho 2.”
Someone else joked that the film is “giving straight to DVD” as one person simply asked: “Why?”
Director Harmony Korine will not be working on the upcoming film and none of the original cast will be taking part. However, producers Chris Hanley and Jordan Gertner are returning to help the project.
They said: “We’re thrilled to be working with Christian and Capture on Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain and excited to keep exploring bold, new, disruptive stories around that wild, fever dream of youth.”
“The desire for spring break to go on forever is something we’ve never let go of.”
The original film was a financial success, grossing a whopping $30 million on a budget of just $5 million.
The R-rated film follows four college girls who rob a diner in an attempt to gather funds for a trip to Florida for their spring break. Along the way, all four get caught up with dodgy people including James Franco’s character Alien.
