Superstore legend dies as co-star pays emotional tribute to ‘memorable’ actor

Superstore actor Jon Miyahara, who portrayed Brett across six series of the workplace comedy available on ITVX, has passed away aged 83, with his co-star Colton Dunn, who played Garrett, breaking the news. The cause of death remains undisclosed.

Taking to Instagram, Dunn posted: “John was a really awesome guy and as a performer could speak volumes with just a look. He was such a memorable part of the Cloud 9 team. It was an honor to know him and work with him. I was lucky enough to meet some of his family and my thoughts are with them. Rest in Peace John.”

Following the announcement, numerous former colleagues expressed their grief.

Kelly Stables (Kelly) remarked: “Oh man! He was always so sweet,” reports the Express. Irene White (Carol), penned: “What an incredible man.”

Michael Bunin (Jeff) also offered his sympathies, writing: “I’m so sad to hear this news. Many fun days and many fun conversations. Very nice guy.”

Devoted viewers also shared their heartbreak in the comments section.

“He always cracked me up so much on that show. Superstore was such a comfort show for me when it came out I gotta do a rewatch soon,” one fan posted.

“Noooooooo. He was always my favorite character. I’m doing yet another watch through of the show, sad to hear,” another mourner added.

“Loved his character in Superstore. Gotta rewatch it one more time for him,” a third viewer commented, followed by a heart emoji. Jon featured in 105 out of the total 113 episodes of Superstore, including the series premiere in 2015 and the highly acclaimed 2021 finale.

He was involved in one of the show’s most memorable moments at the end of season two when audiences were led to believe Brett had been carried away by a tornado that wrecked the store.

At the beginning of season three, in an episode titled Brett’s Dead, his Cloud 9 colleagues held a memorial for him, which included a notable rendition of Radiohead’s Creep on the ukulele.

However, it turned out their grieving was premature as he was actually at work and very much alive.

After Superstore concluded, Jon brought back the character on American Auto, confirming that the two NBC comedies existed in the same universe.
