‘Tate McRae is Gen Z incarnate of Britney Spears as seriously sexy shows sell out at O2’

Britney Spears ran, so Tate McRae could mind-bendingly do the splits. That’s how the saying goes, right? The Canadian singer hasn’t wasted anytime clawing up the ranks to pop superstardom as she’s managed to sell-out two back-to-back nights for her O2 debut.

‘Miss Possessive’ makes for the 21-year-old’s first arena tour that is currently travelling around Europe. And despite being freshly new to performing to the masses after having exploded in popularity on TikTok just a couple of years ago, Tate’s already proving to be the Gen Z incarnate of Britney Spears.

Before she even takes the stage, the video on the big screen of the 20,000 capacity stadium shows a scantily clad Tate in her undies, opening her legs wide as she sits on a security desk.

It really does set the tone for the rest of the evening.

After about a minute of flashing lights and dramatic intro music, the singer bursts onto the stage with backing dancers that look like they should be performing a Magic Mike stunt – and not to an audience consisting of those who have yet to have a sex ed class and their wide-eyed mothers.

But, Tate doesn’t tone down anything regardless of the demographics of her audience – mostly donning the ‘McRae’ uniform of an American football jersey and sparkly hot pants.

Coming out to song ‘Miss Possessive’, the choreography is punchy and raunchy from the get-go, giving a reboot to the 00s ooze of sweaty sexiness that was temporarily given the boot for a more ‘clean’ popstarism.

Musical timing runs through Tate’s body, with even her long honey-blonde hair flicking from one side to the other on beat. She doesn’t dither on energy either, managing to reel off sexually-charged ‘2 hands’, ‘no I’m not in love’ and ‘guilty conscience’ all while grinding and expertly getting on her knees for the first act.

Tate and her equally as erotic dancers continue the naughtiness, with the singer mimicking holding a leash behind the crawling men as she struts in her knee high boots.

For a moment it feels like I’ve accidentally ended up on a Reddit forum that I’d have to confirm my age for. Her wardrobe helped make the show a sexy spectacular viewing, with her sequin cheek-flashing playsuit and her double jogger get up with a sultry lace bra.

But it’s not all curves, cheeks and songs about NSFW canoodling. Tate comes off the huge mainstage for a small B-stage for piano-led pieces, all which she wrote from the age of 13.

Just herself, a piano and the audience’s iPhone lights, the singer shows the talent is not just in her hips and thighs – but her writing and voice too. The heartbreak songs all penned as a young teen went down a treat with Tate’s very much established fanbase that she built from the age of just 13 on YouTube.

Even in the slower moments of older songs ‘One Day’ and ‘that way’ the thousands of fans still managed to recite the words back at the star.

Tate wipes a tear as she addresses the screaming crowd, “thank you to every single person that showed up tonight. It’s hard to believe this moment is real right now as I feel like I’ve been dreaming of playing this arena my entire life…I can’t believe you guys have stuck with me and been fans of me for this long.”

After a short monologue about loving her fans and “reflecting” about writing her latest album So Close To What, Tate is back where to where she thrives the most – singing high energy dance-break numbers.

Around a pole she goes, and expertly she does. Song ‘exes’ really brings out Tate’s impressive technicality, dropping down into the splits that only a normal person could do with a serious dose of WD40.

She’s a pop superstar – and can work the pole too!

This time in a snakeskin print sparkly bodice, Tate kneels down – taking in the screaming 20,000 fans that stand and sit before her – and glowing both from the makeup, and the sweat she’s worked up from putting her all into frolicking around the stage.

It’s time for mega hits ‘Revolving Door’ and the closing song ‘Greedy’, that went TikTok viral two years ago. Everyone is dancing, it’s impossible not to with Tate on stage with her sexual but catchy songs paired with her mega moves.

She’s yet to nail that precious audience interaction, integral to a performance and maintaining your fanbase. Tate’s personality on stage is sex, hot pants and the splits. While there’s no complaints there, Tate needs to build on her between song yap – but that’s hard to do with several outfit changes filled in by leathered trouser men gyrating men.

That’s no doubt that Tate McRae is already a superstar, but just how far will she manage to shoot? She’s already delivering a surge of nostalgia with her Britney-esque moves and amassed a screaming fanbase of teenage girls – it’s a combination for longevity.

She’s cool, sexy and can belt out a song. Who wouldn’t want to be Tate McRae when they grow up? Even I do and I’m older than her.
