Cult kids classic The Goonies has reached the ripe age of 40 – but what happened to the stars of the famous adventure flick The thrilling US movie, released on June 7, 1985, told the story of a bunch of kids who use an old treasure map to find a pirate’s treasure, while also being chased by a gang of criminals.
It became a smash hit at the box office and the raucous comedy – which was the brainchild of Steven Spielberg – is now set to get a sequel.
Here James Moore reveals what happened next to its cast…
Mikey/ Sean Astin
Making his movie debut aged 13 as Michael Walsh, the asthmatic leader of the Goonies, Astin would go on to star in flicks like The War of the Roses and Memphis Belle.
But it’s for his role as Frodo’s sidekick Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings movies of the Noughties that he’s now most famous. He’s also starred in shows like Netflix ’s Stranger Things.
The 54-year-old has been married to wife Christine since 1992 and is a dad-of-three.
Astin says of the Goonies that the cast all knew they were part of something “that was going to be big.”
Chunk/ Jeff Cohen
Winning hearts as the constantly munching youngster Lawrence ‘Chunk’ Cohen, Jeff later struggled to find other big acting parts as he lost his trademark pudginess.
He’s said: “When I hit puberty, it was a career ender for me. I was transforming from Chunk to hunk and I couldn’t get roles any more.”
Today the 50-year-old works as an entertainment lawyer and negotiated a deal for fellow Goonies star Ke Huy Quan for his role in the Oscar-winning movie Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Data/ Ke Huy Quan
The Vietnamese refugee was already famous by the time he got the part of tech-loving Richard ‘Data’ Wang, having starred as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
But after The Goonies, roles dried up and he concentrated on working as a stunt co-ordinator.
His career dramatically bounced back when he scooped the part of the husband in the 2022 movie Everything Everywhere All at Once, winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Quan, 53, who is married to translator Echo Quan and has a black belt in taekwondo, name-checked his Goonies co-star Jeff Cohen as his “brother for life” in his acceptance speech.
Mouth/
After starring as the lippy Clark ‘Mouth’ Devereaux, he bagged roles in flicks like Gremlins, Stand By Me and The Lost Boys.
But he has also battled drug addiction and alcoholism, while claiming that he was once the victim of sexual abuse. Feldman has been divorced twice, is a dad-of-one and is separated from his third wife Courtney Anne Mitchell.
The 53-year-old is also a musician and recently starred on the US version of The Masked Singer.
Brand/ Josh Brolin
Playing Mikey’s athletic older brother, Brandon, was Brolin’s breakthrough role. But his movie career stalled in the 1990s and he was trading stocks to make ends meet until he got a part in the 2007 movie No Country For Old Men.
It led to a resurgence in his career. He’s since starred as US President George W Bush in W, as Thanos in the Marvel movies as well as toughnut Gurney Halleck in the recent Dune franchise.
The 57-year-old dad-of-four has been married three times, divorcing actress Diane Lane and splitting from fiancée Minnie Driver along the way.
Andy/ Kerri Green
At 17, she played Andrea ‘Andy’ Carmichael, a high-school cheerleader, with a crush on Brand, who joins the adventure.
After the role, Green starred in a clutch of other teen movies, before going to college and then starting her own film production company.
The married mum-of-two reckons the lack of CGI is the secret to The Goonies enduring appeal and has said of her co-stars: “We were a family.”
Stef/ Martha Plimpton
Martha was just 15 when she played Andy’s tomboy pal Stephanie ‘Stef’ Steinbrenner.
She’s since starred in a host of movies including Parenthood and Frozen II along with TV series like legal drama The Good Wife and sitcom Raising Hope.
Plimpton once dated actor River Phoenix. Now 54, she’s also an abortion rights campaigner.
Sloth/ John Matuszak
The 6ft 8in ex-NFL player starred as the deformed and abused member of the Fratelli crime family.
After The Goonies he went on to star in other shows like TV’s Miami Vice, but battled drug and alcohol problems.
Tragically he died aged 38, in 1989, after an accidental overdose of prescription meds.
