Star of The Wire has shared an emotional update after his son was injured after being sucked into a tornado.

Tray Chaney’s son Malachi, 19, was involved in the natural disaster on May 29. The actor played Malik ‘Poot’ Carr on the popular HBO series, revealed last week that a tornado had completely destroyed his family’s home in Locust Grove, Georgia, US near Atlanta, while he was in bed. In a terrifying incident, Malachi was captured in the tornado and brutally thrown 300ft away from the home.

That is around the length of an American football field. Chaney was knocked unconscious and buried in the rubble of his home, but managed to emerge with minor injuries.

His son survived, but the college student suffered severe injuries, including broken ribs, multiple scratches over most of his body and fractures on every bone in his face.

However, things could be looking up as Chaney shared a positive update with TMZ on Wednesday (JUNE 6). He said his son was in stable condition and had finally been moved to a less-severe unit after spending six days in the hospital intensive care unit (ICU).

“But it’s going to be a long journey and a long road to recovery. We’re not out of the hospital,” he said.

Chaney added: “We went to war with a tornado and came out on top.”

Chaney suggested that everyone in the house could have been killed by the freak natural disaster, but they managed to come out alive.

Malachi had several lacerations across his upper body, but his lower body was spared due to the fact he was wearing sweatpants.

Chaney himself noted he suffered a head injury. He recounted the moment he regained consciousness only to find his house was completely destroyed on top of him while he was lying in the mud.

Neighbours helped drag him out, and they searched through the house to find Malachi. Nothing was in workable condition, expect for Chaney’s mobile phone.

“We went through war with a tornado, you know?’ Chaney said in the interview. “The tough part is watching [Malachi] be stable and respond the best way he can. And every single day, he doesn’t know what happened.”

Chaney did not realise a tornado was on the way, until he was woken up by what sounded like “a train coming towards” him. “I just remember turning to my right and my walls, and my TVs and my dressers and my bed turned upside down and I levitated in the air,” Chaney said as he began to tear up.

“I just remember covering [my face with my arms] like this, yelling my son’s name out.”
