The Grand Tour star James May has opened up about a ‘worrying’ health symptom he has been experiencing after he was involved in a horror 75mph car crash
James May’s health is suffering after a brutal car crash
The TV presenter took to social media to explain that his neck is making a crunching noise every time he turns his head. Despite his wild days on Top Gear and The Grand Tour being behind him, May is still suffering from his injuries.
He said: “When I move my head around, my neck feels and sounds as if cornflakes have been inserted between the vertebrae. Should I worry about this or just have a gin?”
In true May fashion, he added with a wink: “Tbh I’m already having the gin,” reports the Express.
A fan responded, joking: “I get that too, because I broke my C2 [a bone located in the neck] twenty-five years ago in a car crash and nearly died so I figure the odd cornflake-sound is a fair swap. Actually I think it’s just the cartilage grinding a bit, and it goes away in my case. I don’t drink, but you have a gin!”
One concerned fan took to X and did some digging on Grok to understand the symptoms, coming up with: “The crunching sound and sensation in your neck when you move it-often described as feeling like cornflakes or gravel-[is] likely crepitus, which is the noise made by air bubbles collapsing in the synovial fluid within your joints.”
Another fan chimed in with some personal advice, risking the ire of their beloved TV star: “At the risk of getting blocked by one of my favourite TV personalities, perhaps less gin is part of the answer. I stopped drinking for a few months to see what happens, and was able to observe a mild improvement in terms of joint health.”
But James, who owns a gin label, doesn’t seem ready to give up the spirit just yet. When a fan pleaded for the comeback of the American Mustard gin, he confidently replied: “It is coming back. Stand by!”
Last year, May was rushed to hospital after his car crashed into a wall at 75mph. The TV host looked a bit out of sorts as he stepped out of the vehicle to meet the waiting paramedics, who took him off for X-rays and a brain scan at the hospital.
Despite concerns that he might have suffered a broken neck, the presenter was relieved to find out he only had a broken rib to show for his ordeal.
This isn’t the first time James has had a brush with injury; he’s no stranger to accidents, having previously broken his arm in a mishap outside a pub.
