Dani Harmer, who played Tracy Beaker on the CBBC show, shared her diagnosis with fans and explained that it was her husband Simon who first noticed her “whole personality had changed”
Dani Harmer has left fans gobsmacked by announcing she’s been diagnosed with a condition at just 36.
The TV star, famed for her role as Tracy Beaker in the iconic children’s series from 2002 to 2005 and its spin-offs, has been told she has perimenopause and has been on HRT for 18 months to tackle the symptoms but is still battling hair loss.
Taking to social media to seek advice, Dani posted a heartfelt video on TikTok confessing: “I have been diagnosed with perimenopause.”
She shared her struggles with hair thinning, showing visible bald patches and questioning whether to try hair extensions despite fears they might worsen her hair’s condition. “It could be a terrible idea,” she admitted, “It might make my hair even worse to be honest but it’s really getting me down now.”
Dani explained that it was her hubby Simon who first spotted a drastic change in her personality, which led to her diagnosis. Alongside mood swings, she’s been grappling with increased depression, anxiety, “brain fog”, night sweats, and disrupted sleep.
“There was just too much to ignore,” she said, leading her to consult her GP and receive a prompt diagnosis from a female doctor, with blood tests ruling out other potential issues, reports Birmingham Live.
“I felt like I was being possessed by someone else, it was horrible – I was just getting deeper and deeper into a dark depression,” she shared with evident relief.
“So I’m really glad that I went and I got help. My doctor was more than happy to put me on HRT.”
Dani joyfully reported that after about 18 months on HRT, she “feels like myself again”. She’s also managed to lose the extra weight she put on during lockdown.
Despite the occasional “odd hot flush and stuff”, hair loss remains the only stubborn side effect she’s dealing with. Dani concluded her video with an invitation to assist others curious about perimenopause.
“I’m definitely no expert at all! But if anyone has any questions I’ll try and answer using my experiences,” she offered. Fans have been praising Dani for her candidness in discussing her perimenopause struggles.
“I think I’m suffering with perimenopause too!” one follower confessed. “Kinda scary as I’m 34, but this video makes me feel so much better about it.”
Another expressed gratitude: “Thanks so much for talking about it. I’ve felt so alone and confused at times with it! !”.
One fan couldn’t hide their surprise at Dani’s revelation, still imagining her as the young Tracy Beaker, they exclaimed: “Whaaaaat? You’re about 17yrs old!”
