Phil Collins is on the mend following knee surgery. The 74-year-old star, who earlier this year shared that he’s “very sick”, was at the centre of false online whispers last week claiming he was in hospice care. However, his spokesperson has told The Independent that this simply isn’t true.

Instead, the ex-Genesis lead is in hospital recovering from a knee operation. Phil, battling type 2 diabetes and enduring the aftermath of a 2007 spinal surgery which has left him struggling to even grip a drumstick, confessed to MOJO magazine that his health woes have quashed his desire to make music.

He said: “I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I’m not hungry for it anymore. The thing is, I’ve been sick, I mean very sick.”

The In the Air Tonight legend still hopes of drumming again, but sadly feels he’s “used up my air miles”.

In the documentary Phil Collins: Drummer First, he reflected: “It’s still kind of sinking in a bit… I’ve spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock.”

Having picked up his first drumsticks at the age of five, Phil acknowledges the intense drumming has “taken its toll” on his hands and legs. On his decision to retire, he remarked: “If I can’t do what I did as well as I did it, I’d rather relax and not do anything.

“If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks then I’ll have a crack at it. But I just feel like I’ve used up my air miles.”

Phil has been battling health issues for years, ever since he sustained an injury to a vertebra in his upper neck during a 2009 performance.

In 2011, he had to take a step back from the limelight due to severe nerve damage that left him unable to drum, although he made a comeback in 2015.

While discussing Genesis’ comeback gigs, he admitted: “I’m kind of physically challenged a bit which is very frustrating because I’d love to be playing up there with my son.”
