Seventy years on after the very first episode, BBC presenting legend Michael Aspel says he is stunned how This Is Your Life has not been able to make a full comeback to screens

Telly legend Michael Aspel has declared: “bring back my big red book”. The TV host is stunned that hit show This Is Your Life hasn’t made a comeback by now. Michael, 92, said: “A great show is still a great show – I would like to see a This is Your Life reboot on TV.

“It’s funny they haven’t tried to bring it back, but there is so much that’s similar now like Who Do You Think You Are?” he added. “They are all great shows, I guess.”

This Is Your Life first aired 70 years ago, when Eamonn Andrews fronted it, before Michael took the reigns after his death. At one stage it was the most popular regular show on the BBC with audiences topping 10 million.

Famous faces who appeared to hear their life stories and have pals and family pay tribute to them included George Best, Billy Connolly and Barbara Windsor.

Michael’s presenting stint ran for 16 years until the show ended in 2003 and since then there was only a 2007 one-off special on Simon Cowell hosted by Sir Trevor McDonald.

His chat show Aspel & Company overlapped the series and saw him quiz top names like Beatles George Harrison and Ringo Starr and Hollywood stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone.

And Michael told Yours magazine that he is fan of one programme that has followed in his footsteps.

He said: “I like Graham Norton. I think the show is great and he is full of fun and everyone is utterly relaxed.

“There’s no formality about it, he gets a very high calibre of guests.

“Back in the day, famous people used to come on and chat one-to-one and there’s less of that. But I think some guests now are pleased to not have that formality.”
