The iconic Goodness Gracious Me actress said being on the Great British Bakeoff was like being in the tardis as she had no conept of time in the famous bake-off tent
Meera Syal has admitted competing on Bake Off was like being abducted by aliens. The actress, 63, had an odd experience on the show because she had no concept of time.
She said: “There are no clocks anywhere in the tent and time in there is really weird. At one point I was having a cup of tea, thinking I had loads of time. The next minute, it was five minutes to go and I hadn’t done anything.
“I don’t know what had happened in the meantime. I think there was an alien abduction I didn’t know about. I lost an hour!” Goodness Gracious Me legend Meera found baking in the tent much tougher than when she does it at home. When I bake in my kitchen, I’ve got music on, I estimate things, I don’t get in a flap if things go wrong.
“It’s just not the same at all in the tent. I think the worst thing is the time limit. When you bake at home, it’s ready whenever it’s ready. But in the tent, you’re so aware that the clock’s ticking.”
Despite finding it difficult, Meera still loved getting to be a contestant.
The star took part alongside Derry Girls star Tommy Tiernan, 55, singer Self Esteem, 38, and comic Adam Buxton, 55, for the episode, which is on tonight at 7.40pm on Channel 4.
She said: “It’s really surreal. I’ve seen it so many times on television.
“I think the equivalent was when I filmed Doctor Who and I walked into the Tardis.”
Other celebs on the show include Sarah Beeny, Amelia Dimoldenberg, Scarlette and Stuart Douglas, Kate Garraway and Ellie Goldstein.
While Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding are returning to host the show, Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith’s longstanding friend Caroline Waldergrave will be judgung.
The first two episodes were won by Chris Ramsey and Roman Kemp respectively, and last week’s instalment was won by Kate Garraway.
The presenter was speechless after host Noel announced the news after the gruelling baking challnge.
She responded with “what?”
Kate said: “I can’t believe it! It’s the best day of my life.”
But her success was short-lived when the technical challenge became a nightmare.
When her jam turned to concrete, she said: “I don’t think anyone’s gone from hero to zero quite so fast as I did.”
Ahead of her appearance on the show, Kate said: “Baking is alchemy! So, I don’t think I’ve come out proving myself a Merlin, but I’m hoping not to be the wicked witch of the west.”
