Hundreds of thousands of fans are set to descend on Heaton to witness local heroes Oasis in their first hometown gigs since 2009, but they are being urged to take care in the sunshiiiiiiiiiiine
Oasis fans have been reminded of the importance of being sensible in the sunshine this weekend — as the band’s homecoming gigs are set to be hit by a scorching heatwave.
Temperatures are set to reach highs of 28C as the reunion tour continues on Friday with the first of five gigs at Heaton Park in Manchester. The mercury is set to top 30C for Saturday’s gig.
More than 300,000 fans from all around the world are set to descend on the venue for their first gigs in Manchester since 2009, with promoters SJM warning: “It’s going to be a hot one.”
A yellow heat health alert has been issued to all regions of England, which runs until Tuesday. Event organiser Rob Ballatine urged fans to stay hydrated, wear sun cream and don a bucket hat for the gigs, adding: “And just look after everybody that you are with.”
Fans can’t take food and drink into Heaton Park, but will be allowed to take a collapsible 500ml water bottle and there will be dedicated water refill points throughout the park, bosses said.
SJM said in a statement issued to the Manchester Evening News: “With a very hot weather forecast on both Friday and Saturday, please stay hydrated, you will be permitted to bring a sealed bottle of water up to 500ml.
“This must be collapsible plastic. Solid plastic and metal containers will not be permitted on the grounds of safety. Bottles with broken seals will be emptied. There is free water to refill your bottle on site.”
Fans will be able to enter the venue from 3pm on the day of each show, when temperatures are likely to be at their peak.
Concertgoers are also advised to allow plenty of travel time and arrive early as crowds of 75,000 people for each gig are expected.
The park is around an hour’s walk from Manchester city centre, while trams, trains and shuttle busses will also be available for fans to travel to the park.
The last trains leave Manchester Piccadilly at around midnight each day of the concert. The station building will not remain open overnight.
Margaret Edge, Manchester Piccadilly’s station delivery manager, urged: “Plan your journeys carefully. Allow extra time for your journey and do not rely on the last trains as we’re expecting them to be extremely busy.
“We now know it will be very hot on 11 and 12 July. I’d urge passengers to make sure they have plenty of time to catch their train and bring water on their journey.
“We’ll do everything we can to keep you safe, but please look after yourself when travelling on the rail network in hot weather.”
