The BBC TV star said it rained so much that her wool coat ended up as ‘soggy’ as a ‘dishcloth’ and she ended up traipsing round in an unflattering plastic poncho
Telly weather presenter Carol Kirkwood’s romantic weekend in Venice turned into a damp squib – because she had not checked the forecast. The BBC star said it rained so much on the trip with her new husband Steve her wool coat ended up as ‘soggy’ as a ‘dishcloth’.
She had to resort to traipsing round the Italian city wearing an unflattering plastic poncho.
Carol, 63, who has been presenting the weather for the broadcaster since 1998, said she ended up looking like a ‘deflated tent’ which killed the romance.
She told Woman’s Weekly magazine: “My husband Steve and I decided on a romantic weekend escape to Venice.
“Gondolas, candlelit dinners, the works. What could possibly go wrong?
“Well, firstly, I didn’t check the weather forecast. Unbelievably it poured the whole time.
“I’d packed a long woolly coat – not exactly ideal in a downpour.
“By the end of the weekend it was so soggy it could have been wrung out like a dishcloth. And it started to smell. My shoes were no better. I was squelching through St Mark’s Square and I ended up buying one of those plastic ponchos.
“Not exactly the height of Italian style.
“It’s hard to feel glamorous when you look like a deflated tent! Safe to say that trip changed things. Now I never go anywhere without checking the forecast – twice.”
Carol joined the Beeb as a secretary before becoming a general presenter on BBC radio channels 2, 4 and Scotland.
She began specialising in weather after undergoing Met Office training.
Carol, who is BBC Breakfast’s main weather presenter, has also appeared on Strictly, The One Show, comedy quiz Would I Lie To You and had a cameo in telly soap Hollyoaks.
She announced her engagement to Steve Randall live on BBC Breakfast from the Chelsea Flower Show three years ago and he became her second husband when they married in Cliveden, Bucks, on December 27 2023.
Carol recently revealed she plans to retire in two years and spend her time travelling with her husband in a camper van.
